I can say that I have cats and I have never had moles. Every person I know that does have moles does NOT have a cat.

I believe I actually have a 4th cat lurking in the barn that someone recently dumped off but I havent caught it yet. My other cats are definitely fighting with another cat so I'm pretty sure I have a "new" one.

Its living in a barn that's right next to the most extensive mole tunneling on the whole place. The cats have to literally walk over the mole tunnels to get into the barn!

So you'd think the mole hunting would be an excellent side business for them (as it were).

I have two puppies who are also "on the hunt" as well. My neighbor has always put poison down the holes but has refrained because my pups are so eagerly digging up the tunnels and we're all afraid they'll be poisoned. I believe that's probably why the damn moles are migrating my way and multiplying.

Honestly, I don't care about my lawn's appearance. I have too many acres to worry about it. I just had to comment on the cat thing. On the scale of 1 - 10, the mole damage rates about a 1 in my mind. I rarely think about it and only when I mow.

3. Moles are very hard to get rid of.

Cats won't do the job, they don't dig for prey; few mammals will eat them even if they can catch them because they taste bad. There are only a couple of things you can do: Set traps for them, preferably early in the year before they reproduce. Or, get rid of their food source, which is mostly earthworms and grubs. The way to get rid of grubs and worms, unfortunately, is by poisoning them, and a lot of people understandably prefer not to use pesticides because they also kill other things.

Or else you can learn to enjoy operating a mole farm.

Alternately you can dig up your lawn to about 4 feet down, replace the bottom three feet with concrete, put top soil over it, and have a somewhat mole resistant yard...

11. Cinch traps if you aren't opposed.

They aren't too hard to set once you learn how. They do snap hard, so beware of your fingers when you set them.

Someone else already told you to do the trapping in the spring. They pair off to mate in the spring, so you want to get them before your problem multiplies, so to speak.

My farmer friend swears by these traps. Wilco carries them.

Have to agree with Tuesday Afternoon. Be sure to get a good mouser. My cat has cleaned the moles out of about 3 acres. She will sit over an active mole hill for hours on end, day after day until she gets it or them.

Locate a frequently used run and put the bait in there.
