2nd greatest drummer of all time
Well we know the greatest drummer of all time is John Bonham - so who is the 2nd best?

1. I prefer Keith Moon to Bonzo for #1, but to each their own.
Mike Shreive also kicks ass.

32. Yep, I've gotta go with Moon at #1.
I haven't even read the rest of the thread to see how many times Neil Peart is mentioned...I'm not a Rush fan, but credit where credit is due, ya know?

Also, Phil Collins...back in the day, pre-"Sussudio," in Genesis (while Hackett was still around) and Brand X...amazing.

2. John Bonham is my personal favorite
because I love Led Zep so much but I can't say subjectively who is best or better even because sometimes the guy might not be brilliant but he is perfect for the band he's in.

So with that all said I will list some contenders for number 2 anyway:
Neil Peart - and I don't want to hear any "soulless, mechanical" bullshit. IF that's what you think you are not listening. THe man is brilliant and his lyrics alone should qualify him in the soul category. I think it was a popular criticism becasue someone said it once and everyone else just repeated it without knowing jack shit about music. IF it speaks to you it has soul and he speaks to me.
Buddy Rich
Proscriptor (drummer, lead singer for Texas based black metal band Absu)
Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer)
Nicko McBrain
Cozy Powell (maybe more for sentimental reasons than actual innovation)
and probably hundreds of Jazz drummers whose names I do not know but I should.

Phenomenal player in almost any setting.

Scott Travis and Nicko McBrain are my two personal favorites.

11. Depends on how you define greatness, if you're looking for technical skill few rock guys qualify
I've been a big fan of Gene Krupa, ever since I found out he was Keith Moon's inspiration.

Also, Ringo. I don't care for fancy drumming. I look a good solid backbeat.

17. Some good names have already been mentioned
Stewart Copeland, Anysley Dunbar and Ringo. I'll throw in Greg Errico. Think about it, how many other drummers could fit in with both Weather Report and Sly Stone?

18. Let's not forget Bill Bruford.
And as rock drummers go, Phil Collins was pretty awesome. Most people think it's a joke when I say that, but he was a very, very good drummer. I love the sound and energy of the drums on some of the early Genesis albums.

27. +1 For rock drummers, it's Bruford,
with Peart, Bonham, Moon, Simon Phillips, The Great Clem Burke of Blondie - the only drummer who could have replaced Moony in the Who and yes, Phil Collins (strictly as a _drummer_) in hot pursuit.

29. There weren't that many really great ones.
There were some interesting ones - Budgie of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Steve Morris of Joy Division/New Order come quickly to mind - but not many great ones. Not surprising in a style of music that was founded on pride in one's inability to play, at least in the UK. Clem was something extraordinary and would be in any era: the stylistic love child of Keith Moon and Carl Palmer.

"Dreaming" alone puts him in my Drummers' Hall of Fame. :wow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XK24UpGJEmA&feature=fvst

30. Funny you should mention that song
It's one of the first songs that got me interested in drums. IT grabs your attention right at the beginning, and keeps it even with as it competes with the catchy melody

Other new wave drummers I respect are Topper Headon of the Clash, Bruce Gary of the Knack, and Dave Barbarossa of the early version of Adam and the Ants. Yes, the Knack's music was ridiculous, but the band members could play.
