Is what I say to fellow guitarists who start playing the bass. Only a few of them get the joke. I own a bass and play a little but not nearly enough. Try listening to any random piece of contemporary music with out the bass. It is an incredible instrument. Some of the stuff I learned on guitar translates but not as much as I thought.

I mostly play mandolin these days, another instrument that is basically four strings. its also incredibly difficult.

If I see a bassist with a 5- or 6-string bass
up on stage -- he/she starts OUT needing to
prove him/herself to me -- and that he/she's
not just a poser. MOST people who play those

A really good bassist will play bass lines, not guitar parts, on bass.

A really good bassist will also listen to and work closely with the drummer.

IMHO, that's the way I hear it.
