I just saw one single cockroach in the cubboard above the stove at my parents' house.

1. No, there is never just one.

2. I once found a roach at my Mom's place and no others were ever seen.

I told her not to keep paper bags or wooden baskets from the farmers market as she used to do but toss them in the trash outside as soon as she got home.

I have heard the saying that there can't be just one but from my experience I don't think that should be taken as gospel.

7. How big was it?

If it was one of those little German roaches, there are more like it around, unfortunately. If was one of those big, brown jobs, it's possible it was the only one. The smokey browns and other wood roaches like come indoors this time a year to get out of the cold. Around here, they're also looking for water, since we've been in a major drought. My cats used to hunt them when they were young. Now, my remaining slug-cat just watches them.

Roachproof (hardware store) or 20 Mule Team Borax (grocery store). They are both pretty much the same thing except Roachproof is more expensive because it is electrostatically charged so that it clings to the roachs' bodies better. The roaches carry it back to other roaches where gets on them and kills them too. The powder wears off their exoskeletons which is how it kills them. They like warm, damp places so in addition to putting it under floorboards and in corners, so I would put some under the kitchen sink and laundry areas. I had a terrible roach problem in my first condo and after a week of putting Roachproof out I never saw another one. I probably killed them off for the whole building. I remember when I was putting some out I looked under my kitchen sink and up at the plumbing/pipes and must have seen 30-50 roaches crawling about. That Roachproof starting flying at that point under there! This will really get rid of them.

I think I got all of them killed by now, and the cycle stopped. Had to throw a BUNCH of dry foods away and scrub the entire pantry...get special traps...Jeez bugs suck.

And I think they got here when hoarder MIL brought some stuff to bake with over a while back...her house scares me
