I dare not post this in GD, but can anyone give me the lowdown on Troy Davis?

Sad to say I'm only vaguely aware of the situation, I know the general terms. Is there some condensed version (other than a cop was killed, this guy was convicted, he says he didn't do it) someone can fill me in on?

But basically, it's not just that he says he didn't do it, everybody makes those claims:

*it's that 7 of the 9 people who testified against him now say in affidavits to the court they lied under oath.
*several say the DA's office and police coerced them with threats.
*3 IDed someone else as the murderer
*The two people who didn't recant:
---One, Redd Coles, is the only other suspect ever looked at for the crime (who all 3 eyewitnesses IDed as the murderer and other people have stated Coles brags about getting away with it)
---The other only testified that they saw Davis with a gun earlier in the night. Coles also had a gun.
*Neither gun was ever recovered.
*No physical evidence linking Davis to the crime was ever recovered.
*He was convicted solely based on the testimony of the eyewitnesses.

8. A number of reasons....

1.) They said that wasn't compelling.
2.) No new facts had been presented. (see next point)
3.) His lawyers used those facts last year to get a hearing on whether he should have a new trial...then they didn't call any witnesses or put forth much effort...and lost. They thought basically that the facts were on their side and mailed it in.

11. Some background on the circumstances of that hearing that Troy's lawyers lost...

(1) During the post-conviction habeas process, Davis’ ability to gather evidence & to provide an innocence claim was hampered by a two-thirds budget cut for the Georgia Resource Center, reducing the number of staff attorneys to two, which were representing 80 prisoners.

(2) In addition, due to the Anti-Terrorism & Effective Death Penalty Act, time limits on access to the federal appeals process by death-row prisoners severely hurt Davis’ case.

I still don't know why Davis was a suspect, what he had to do with the scene, who he was with at the time, etc; lots of very basic questions.

14. Please note: Not everyone in GA wanted his execution....

or agreed with the decision. It should go without saying that there are plenty of people HERE who were against it, protested, and don't believe in the death penalty for anyone. However, not everyone in GD understands or believes this.
