Best/Worst t.v. theme songs?
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 04:51 PM by BlueIris
(By theme song, I meant the music that played in the background of the opening credits.)

My 'best' vote goes to the theme for the original Law & Order. Simple, classy, totally satisfying.

'Worst' goes to the godawful mess that was the theme for Boston Legal. I never once managed to get through those credits (always hit mute, or ff'ed through them.) Awful.

I also hated the theme for Enterprise. Because, you know, lyrics.

2. Best ever - Theme to "Peter Gunn" by Henry Mancini.
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 05:02 PM by hifiguy
Hands down. So cool it hurts and as iconic as the James Bond Theme.

STNG was pretty good, too, but nowhere near as cool as Peter Gunn.

What a piece of shit that whole thing was. The theme song I mean. I loved the series. My daughter and I would race to Fast Forward through the theme though so we never had to hear a note of it. lol

As for favorites, I liked the themes and from Buffy and Angel but my favorite is TANK! by Mai Yamane and Seatbelts for the anime series Cowboy Bebop. The closing theme song, The Real Folk Blues, is also a fave.

Props for The Andy Griffith Show, Addams Family, Peter Gunn, Dick Van Dyke Show, Star Trek, Bonanza, Rawhide, Beverly Hillbillies (Texas Tea), All in the Family, Flintstones (Modern Stone Age family), and of course, The Lone Ranger.

On edit: Worst - pretty much any series you don't like, including many from the early '80s. Batman's screeching theme was OK at the time, but now I wonder what I was thinking.

69. Lone Ranger was stolen from Rossini.
The William Tell Overture.

Sgt. Preston of the Yukon (radio show) was the Donna Diana Overture, also by Rossini, I believe.

There's a real quiet woodwind section at the beginning of the William Tell Overture, before the fast stuff.

I liked the Perry Mason and Peter Gunn themes.

Mike Hammer with Stacy Keach used "Harlem Nocturne".

24. Most irritating: Brady Bunch. Best:: Gilligan's Island because of the meter.
Gilligan's Island is written in "common meter" which is four feet followed by three feet. Ba-dum-ba-dum-ba-dum ba-dum/ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum. Same meter that many great songs are written in, such as Amazing Grace and House of the Rising Sun. This means you can switch the melodies and lyrics around for hours of silly adolescent giggles. I never could resist that.

59. Visited friends in Chicago many years ago
We went to some hole-in-the-wall place where a group called Art Thieves was performing. They had apparently started out at this dive years ago, and were doing a nostalgia gig because they were really too big for the venue. They did a creditable job of "The Fishin' Hole" along with covers of many selections from the K-Tel compilation albums (the obscure stuff). Before then, I hadn't known there were lyrics to the song.

Listening to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" a couple of weeks ago, they had Dick Van Dyke on the "Not my job" segment. At the conclusion of the interview part, Mo Rocca sang a few notes of the Dick Van Dyke Show theme song. Van Dyke laughed, and said, "That song has lyrics, you know. Would you like to hear it?" He then sang the lyrics, which I think were written by Morey Amsterdam. After that, Peter Sagle (sp?) the host said he could now die happy.

Chuck - "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cake
Scrubs - "Superman" by Lazlo Bane
Cupid (the 90s original) - "Human" by The Pretenders
The Big Bang Theory - I believe it's called "The History of Everything" by the Barenaked Ladies
Total Drama Island/Action/World Tour

63. Best: original Jonny Quest, Worst Star Trek: Enterprise (Faith of the Heart)
The Jonny Quest theme from 1964: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D88g1vCydZk

The percussion-heavy big band jazz theme music for the 1960s series and each episode's score were all composed by Hoyt Curtin. In a 1999 interview, he stated that the jazz band for the series consisted of 4 trumpets, 6 trombones, 5 woodwind doublers, and a 5 man rhythm section.<19> Alvin Stoller or Frankie Capp usually played drums. While a string section comes in at moments of tension or pizzicato for comic relief, the score is primarily driven by a big brass sound. Curtin stated that the band took about an hour to record the main theme. It contained a trombone solo performed by jazz veteran Frank Rosolino, and a complex riff in which the trombone players were physically unable to keep up with the rapidly changing slide positions needed.<19> Cues in the series were generally recorded in one take, done by a regular group of union session players who could "read like demons".

65. Sopranos deserves a mention. Of the various Star Trek franchises,
I prefer the DS9 theme, although Voyager is quite good as well...

67. Babylon 5 had five different themes, one for each season,
and they got better each year. The composer was Christopher Franke, former member of Tangerine Dream, so you know right away it's going to be good to great :D

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3 (my favorite for being hard-edged/industrial)

Season 4

Season 5 (my favorite of the five)

The last movement to end the series was especially moving:

Also, The opening for the spinoff, Crusade. I liked Chen's music the moment I heard it, but then again, I've always liked music with an industrial edge and beat to it. Unfortunately, too many sci-fi fans don't seem to share that taste in music...

And I think ST: Enterprise is universally hated, especially for the lyrics...

But I pretty much love anything Danny Elfman does.

78. Best - perhaps partly due to sentimental memories of childhood - the theme from the old police
series, 'Z-Cars' - based, I believe, on the folk song 'Johnny Todd'.

Worst - and I'm surprised that no one else has brought it up: the theme song of 'Neighbours': 'Neiiighbours! Everybody needs good neiiiighbours!", etc. It quite puts me off watching the programme at all.

81. A lot of good ones mentioned here, so I'll say "3rd Rock From the Sun"
This was on when my son was small. Every week he'd get all excited when it came on, & always did a funny dance to it. He was just too cute.

Ah, such a good memory. :)

:hi:

84. Can I mention a local (New Orleans) tv intro that I thought was the ABSOLUTE BEST when I was a kid
Edited on Fri Sep-30-11 12:02 AM by pacalo
This is the intro to a local tv character's show on Saturday nights named "Morgus the Magnificent" who had a laboratory at the "old icehouse". His sidekick was a tall, hooded henchman with HUGE hands named "Chopsley". In between sequences, there would be a horror movie; funny thing was, kids mainly tuned in to watch Morgus & Chopsley -- no kidding, they were that good (in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way, too).

Love the intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CXvj6ksh2Y
