how to find out if there is a summons is filed against you anywhere ?

Or for a summons to even apply to you it has to be in the same state you live in ? not a state you used to live in ?

I incurred about 40k of medical debt (had to remove the gallbladder , and had no insurance at the time) , and now a collector claims that they tried to send me a summons twice (probably within the previous state I lived in) and left me a number to call on my cellphone.

I made a mistake , I acknowledged on the phone that I was the person , but did not acknowledge the debt nor did I give any private information.

this sucks.

For my current state : will I have to request records from all courts in all counties just to confirm if their is something there ? or is there an easily accessible website that can compile this information from every court.

I am almost at the statute of limitations point and don't want an unanswered summons to screw this.

Laws and court record access varies from state to state, and an attorney can best advise you on how to proceed.

In my less than fully educated/informed opinion, let 'stte' lapse, DON'T run after 'summons.'

3. Debt collectors are sneaky bastards and they lie.

If you had actually been sued you probably would have been personally served with a summons and complaint; depending on the jurisdiction, service by mail of an initial complaint might not even be permitted. And normally the venue would be the place where you lived or in which the debt was incurred. So you could check with the court in the county where you used to live and where the medical treatment occurred (if you didn't live in that county). Some court systems have web sites where you can look up that sort of thing; the only one I've ever accessed is Minnesota's but it's very handy, easy to use, and shows all civil and criminal actions filed in all counties. You could find out using google - use terms like court records, (your state).
