adult is trying to sleep.
rug rat is wiggling or something in the bed. This annoys you, but the rug rat is your baby.
You grab the rug rat/cuddle them in to reduce their wiggles/etc so you can sleep peacefully.

True for people. True for cats. Probable true for squirrels, moles, birds etc.
