The house I've been in for the past 10 years had the drain pipes on the garage side dumping pretty much all of the water onto the walkway from the driveway to the back of the garage. It froze. It was not good. I copped an attitude.
I completely pulled up the walkway, ran drain pipe extensions into the ground and into that black pipe shit they use on construction sites in under-ground channels out away from the house, put a reinforcement mesh over the tubes, and then set in a new walkway with all new blocks (instead of bricks). Enter the leaves.
Guess what? It's a pain in the ass to put a hose up into the drain pipe at the top of the garage to flush out the pipes. Solution? They make these weird little adapters for drain pipes. I used a Dremel to cut a hole in each one and fastened an adapter to each of them. That made it easy to put a garden hose down them to flush out the crap. Problem: The fucking chipmonks LOVE those little "hideout holes". I guess I could cover them with mesh, but I sort of figure if the fuckers can deal with a major rain storm, they better be able to deal with a garden hose.
