What was your favorite toy growing up?

There was a story on the radio this morning about the "Toy Hall of Fame" and newest inductees. The DJ's must have talked about it for 15 minutes afterward. My favorites were my Barbie doll (of course), my doll house and my blue and yellow Tonka truck (we had a gravel driveway at the time so I was in heaven).

10. A collection of die-cast cars

and simple wooden blocks. I built great civilizations with those blocks. Everyone had a car, of course.

11. I had lots of toys that I loved, but...

...probably my favorites were those little plastic animals. They all said "Made in Hong Kong" on the bottom in those days. They weren't articulated action figures or anything exceptional, but I had hours of adventure with them out in my sandbox, and also indoors, having built lego homes for them and worked out all sorts of stories and character interactions among them.

Oh, and the plastic dinosaurs! Same as the above, they were all characters to me who interacted and formed friendships and enmities and experienced grand adventures. Mine were like these, only in nicer colors:

Yeah, I had some of the cavemen too, but they didn't see much action except for a brief period when I had a historical interest in cavemen. I was mostly an animal girl. :)

13. Matchbox and HotWheels cars and track

We'd buy all the track we could at yard sales, and set up the most intense race courses! My parents had a huge tri-level home, and we had some incredibly complex tracks running from top to bottom! Plus all the physics we were learning, like how to bank turns to keep the cars from flying off, where to place hills to gain speed, etc.

15. I used my fashion plates a lot. Back then they were actually plates, and you rubbed

a crayon over them to make an outfit to color in. Nowadays apparently it's a computer game.

I don't remember how many volumes it had, but I read every page. My favorite articles were the ones on ghosts, Greek myths, and silver. I also liked the timeline showing the lives of composers, and the chart showing the average lifespans of various animals.

I had a big set of those, with the little pins to hold the rings down. I also collected a large number of similar "promotional" versions that stores gave away at the time.

Also something called "bing, bang, boing" that had ball bearings that you would bounce over drum heads and send through spirals: big fun!

I remember the day when Major Matt Mason's right leg became floppy, and I couldn't set him in an action space hero pose anymore. I ran to my mother in tears. She wrapped his leg up in athletic tape and told me that it was a cast she was putting on, because Major Matt's leg had been crushed by a giant boulder in a moonslide. I was okay with that explanation.

Pretty soon Major Matt, Doug, Jeff, and Sergeant Storm were all sporting casts/splints on all four of their extremities due to various mishaps. This was how I learned that moon exploration is a very hazardous business.

I used to have an old... I guess it used to be a vanity suitcase for a woman's makeup/toiletry items. A bit bigger than a hat box, it was a hard-sided, cubical suitcase from the 60's in that particular blue-with-a-hint-of-gray color of plastic that seems to come from that era.


Anyway, it was half-filled with Legos, which was a pretty fair collection of them, considering how expensive they are.

I've been looking for it to give to my son; he's starting a pretty good collection of his own!
