1. Its popularity is due to Caddyshack
Sadly, few golf tournaments resemble that movie.

2. Happy Gilmore did a lot to bring the unwashed masses into the boring fold
Went to a golf tournament the other day and an ice hockey game fight broke out!

3. I usually only watch the majors, but I think they have great drama
The U.S. Open and the (British) Open Championship are especially exciting. Even beyond the question of who will win, where a player finishes can effect things like participation in the Ryder Cup and qualification for future majors. There are so many possibilities because there are so many competitors, and at the major tournaments you know the fields are made up of most of the best players in the world.

6. It's fun seeing how the tiniest quirks of nature can utterly destroy a person's composure.
A little dew on the grass, the flutter of a butterfly wing, the involuntary twitch of a small muscle, and soon all hope is lost. It becomes a huge struggle just to finish the game.

By the end of the game a great golfer can be a basket case. It's great drama, but usually without the gore and violence of football, boxing, or NASCAR.

I see shots I genuinely believe I can achieve if I just try hard enough...

10. Most of us schmucks know how hard it is to make that thing go straight.
And therefore admire someone who can.

But yes, boring as hell.

Sometimes the scenery is nice though.

If you set aside how many billions of gallons of hazardous waste it took to get the grounds looking so good.

15. Golf would be much more exciting if the grounds were wild and unkempt..
Maintain the greens and let everything else go feral.

Every golf course would be unique and highly adapted to the local environment. No irrigation except for the greens, and no chemicals, just a mower.

Bring the game closer to its roots.

Sports where you can claim to be playing a sport while just sitting with a beer in your hand:
Golf
Bowling
Curling

Any others?

20. It's somewhat similar to basketball
where you really only need to watch the last five minutes of the game, or NASCAR where you only need the last 20 laps.

In golf, all you need is the back nine on Sunday.
