Even beyond the question of who will win, where a player finishes can effect things like participation in the Ryder Cup and qualification for future majors. There are so many possibilities because there are so many competitors, and at the major tournaments you know the fields are made up of most of the best players in the world.

By the end of the game a great golfer can be a basket case. It's great drama, but usually without the gore and violence of football, boxing, or NASCAR.

Maintain the greens and let everything else go feral.

Every golf course would be unique and highly adapted to the local environment. No irrigation except for the greens, and no chemicals, just a mower.
