38. *Wikis 'preposition'*
"Prepositions (or more generally, adpositions, see below) are a grammatically distinct class of words whose most central members characteristically express spatial relations (such as the English words in, under, toward) or serve to mark various syntactic functions and semantic roles (such as the English words of, for).<1> In that the primary function is relational, a preposition typically combines with another constituent (called its complement) to form..." :boring:

The bartender says, "So, I guess you won't be needing a drink".

The naked blonde replies - "AAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGG!!!!"

I've never heard the end of that joke, if it exists that is. I've figured out damn near all of the references in "The Breakfast Club", but not that one.

Fall through the ceiling yelling "Oh shit."
Then says "Forgot my pencil."

It was just an ad lib, there is no punch line. Thats what make sit funny.

8. Okay - totally new debate - They are NOT interchangeable.
Agnostic is the view that god(s) may or may not exist and it really doesn't matter either way. (I don't give a shit)
Atheist is the view that they do not exist and humans would have no way to verify their existence anyway. (I shit on it)

It may seem like a subtle difference, but it isn't.

A-Gnostic = without knowledge.

I am an agnostic atheist.

10. I sort of fit in the same category. But the contemporary views aren't quite the same.
Most agnostics simply acknowledge that there is no way to determine existence or not of a higher power so there's no validity in worshiping an imaginary being anymore than there is waiting for Santa - and in many ways the spirit of Santa is more real.

Most atheists, while without "belief", are quite verbal in their denial of any higher power because it can NOT exist. I've always viewed that as a belief of sorts, but it isn't a belief in a higher being, but rather the lack of the possibility of one.

As I get older, I'm moving more toward the absolute atheist - I can't know and don't give a shit anyway.

14. Most atheists are NOT quite verbal in saying "it can NOT exist".
In fact, I've only met ONE atheist IRL who EVER stated that,
and I know a LOT of atheists.

You are defining what some like to call a "Strong Atheist".

There are VERY FEW of them.

Even Richard Dawkins, a "strong atheist" if there ever was one,
states that the PROBABILITY of their being a "god" (undefinable
it itself) is so LOW AS TO BE IMPOSSIBLE, and, like fairies in
the garden, dismissable.

If "god" stood in front of Dawkins, Dawkins would not deny
that he existed.

11. The debate on this is interesting
I think your definitions are some of the better ones that I have seen, but doesn't the conclusion that humans would have no way to verify the existence of a deity itself establish that atheism is limited to human capabilities and therefor must accept the possibility that the existence of deities is possible but non-detectable by humans.

I believe the terms are truly interchangeable, but some like the idea that not believing has two levels and they can be in either group.

I see it that ATHEIST is a religion = the BELIEF, and firm belief, that there is no God.
Agnostic would be a non-religion = not decided, on the fence, don't know what to think, may decide later if they feel like it.

If you left these out of the poll you would not be allowd to play here, and what fun would that be?

Protestant. Yes, definitely.

Baptist (weird, etc.) - Well, I'm a member of a Southern Baptist Church. Is that weird enough?

Other Christian groups - Probably.

Asian religion? - Well, my religion did originate in Asia.

Catholic? - large C no; small c yes

Islam? - Well, it literally means "I submit". I do seek to submit to the will of God. (Though I often fail.)

Just as a person can consider themselves culturally (and/or ethnically) Jewish even if they choose to have nothing to do with the actual religion, I think an analogy can be drawn with many people from a Catholic background.

If there is a sentient being pulling the strings, then why would it treat most of the world's population like crap? Why doesn't it care how it treats people?

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? ~Epicurus

33. What if I believe in a God as I don't understand Him?
No, I don't if he's a Him, either. It was just my first concept of God was as a "He," and I am unable to think of "Him" as a "She." But if asked if I am religious, by the connotations of the word, I would have to say, no. Do I pray? Yes. Not enough, though.

My opinion of other people is that if they express a belief strongly enough to call it a religion, they are religious, in my mind. If an atheist expresses a positive belief that there is no God, then he is religious, and atheism is his religion, in my mind.

An agnostic by its definition is 'undecided,' so I would say an agnostic is *not* religious, just open-minded.

So, I know nobody here thinks I am right but it is still my opnion. And what is a religion, other than an opinions?

Am I religious?

Not at all.

37. EVERYone is agnostic
I see it this way: Agnostic and atheist are the answers to 2 completely different questions.
Do you know there is a god? No, I'm agnostic. Yes, I am gnostic (though i'd like to see the proof that lets you know. Also not to be confused with the christian sect of Gnostics which is different).
Do you BELIEVE there is a god? No, I am an atheist. Yes, I am a theist (be it deist, monotheist, polytheist or whatever. You believe there is a supernatural being that governs the universe or at least created it).

I don't know if there is a god. I see nothing in the universe around me to make me think there might be. I do not believe there is a god. I also don't think anyone else can know for sure there is a god as there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that there might be.

I think everyone is born agnostic and atheist.

I was raised in an independent, fundamentalist Baptist church and graduated from a Christian high school run by them. Yes, they are weird.

45. Militant Agnostic = "I don't 'know'... AND YOU DON'T EITHER!!!"
I grew up Baptist, but since reaching an age of reasoned thought, i have found that all paths of belief contain a few morsels of absolute truth (usually related to how we should behave toward our fellow inhabitants of this little orb in space), surrounded by a lot of dogmatic bullshit and fairy tale.

My moral compass points quite nicely to the side of compassion and goodwill, but without being forced there by the looming threat of eternal damnation and torture by some unknowable deific being.

I don't think the scriptures should all be taken literally, think there should be an openness to other opinions, and I don't let it come into my life a lot. I also don't like Christian pop. I prefer gospel, and at Christmas time, I enjoy Christmas music. I love some music done BY Christians, like Eisley, but their music is more pop/rock with the occasional hint of their religion.

50. I will say Agnostic..
I believe there is a higher being or beings and an afterlife. I think all religions have benefical aspects but most major religious traditions have been corrupted by humans and are used for selfish purposes at times. That being said, I do see a benefit to one's life through a faith. I don't think any one religion has it right nor do I think any has it wrong.. I just think many religions are used in ways that are not for enhancing one's faith nor one's contribution to society.
