Couple of Hummingbird photos I took.

I love these little birds. Years ago I actually had one that visited a fuchsia bush we had and it would rest on a clothesline. After many attempts, it let me get close enough and I put could put my finger under it's feet and it would jump on and perch there. My one and only experience at "training" a wild animal. :)

Those are magnificent pictures! You have stopped the motion of their wings, and this is devilishly hard to do...

Just have to crank the shutter speed up to about 1250. The trick is keeping them in focus. Quick little buggers. :)

I love hummingbirds, too. Once I was holding the hose putting water in a watering can and a hummingbird hovered and drank from the stream.
Sometimes on the first warm days in spring I noticed that one would go way up above our house, a loud 'PEEP!' would be heard at the apex of flight and SWOOP the little hummingbird would dive and curve up to the same apex again and again. Later we saw a NPR program about their courtship flight, and the 'PEEP' sound actually comes from their wings.

Have you seen the hummingbird nest cam? Phoebe has laid eggs recently and they are due to hatch around December 11th.-

The chat next to it is kinda funny (oh, I just noticed you can click on 'no chat' below the video) but have a look in daylight (it's in Southern California) and you'll see Phoebe and her nest in a rose bush.

6. Doesn't look like a red-throated - where on the other side of the Mississippi river are you?

Apparently we only have one kind on this side.

8. The Rufous hummer is starting to show up in the southeast n/t

11. San Francisco Bay Area. I believe this to be a female Anna's.

Seems a little late in the year for them, they should be migrating, but we've had exceptionally warm weather so I guess she's just hanging back.

They're year round here, and still defending turf even though it's been close to freezing at night.
