HUGO is a really good movie!

Went to see it last night, the 3D version. Scorsese made 3D smart. I won't spoil it but he uses it in a way that completely enhances the plot and gives the viewer an important experience. It's a long, gently paced film but is beautiful and interesting and charming and funny (largely thanks to Sasha Baron Cohen who is as subtly hysterical here as he is over the top elsewhere). If you love movies, if you love the aesthetic and history and beauty of the art form itself, I highly recommend it.

I thought it got too preachy, and by the end, I thought I'd been snookered a little bit. I know that Scorsese has a thing for old film preservation, and the story was enchanting, but he laid it on rather thick. I'm glad I saw the movie, but I doubt I'd like to see it again, knowing the story's agenda. I liked Cohen, who did indeed underplay his part as much as he overplays other parts. I also thought Jude Law turned in a nice performance in the very short Dad role.
