I recorded a PBS program titled "John Sebastian Presents: Folk Rewind"...
First, how did he grow so old? I loved me some Loving Spoonful. My idols aren't supposed to grow old. :wtf:

And then they showed Bobby Darrin singing an anti-war song. :wow:

I honestly do do not remember this one.

Do any of my fellow oldsters recall this song?

SIMPLE SONG OF FREEDOM

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Hey there, Mister Black Man can you hear me?
I don't want your diamonds or your game
I just want to be, someone known to you as me
and I will bet my life you want the same

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Seven hundred million are you listening?
Most of what you read is made of lies
But speaking one to one, ain't it everybody's sun
To wake to in the morning when we rise?

So come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war

Brother Solzhenitsyn are you busy?
If not would you drop a friend a line?
Tell me if the man, who is plowing up your land
has got the war machine upon his mind

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
That we, the people here, don't want a war

Now no doubt some folks enjoy doin' battle
Like presidents, prime ministers and kings
So let's build them shelves where they can fight among themselves
and leave the people be who like to sing

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
That we the people here, don't want a war

Let it fill the air
Tell the people everywhere
That we the people here, don't want a war

1. I vaguely remembered it when I saw the same show
It's a Darin song that was, IIRC, also recorded by some other artists in the 1960s. Google sez Tim Hardin also recorded it.

2. I remember hearing this long long ago.
But I never thought about it much. It is really beautiful. May have to buy this one.

3. I remembered hearing in the late '60sor early '70s
My thought was that Darin was trying to catch up to the rest of the world.
It got very little airplay after the first week or so, at least where I lived.

4. I was a Bobby Darin fan and remember this song.
It should have been blasted from all the rooftops on the lead up to the Iraq war. This part rings true.

To wake to in the morning when we rise?"
