Keith Richards, Mick Jagger pay for bluesman’s Homewood burial

The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are paying for private burial Tuesday of blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin at Washington Memorial Gardens in south suburban Homewood, the late musician’s partner said.

The lead guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf and sonar trailblazer died Sunday at the age of 80 in a New Jersey hospital.

In an online posting, the late musician’s partner, Tori Ann Mamary, said the Glimmer Twins “insisted on picking up the full expenses for Hubert’s funeral. God bless the Rolling Stones.”

4. Clapton refused to do the "London Sessions" if Mr.Sumlin wasn't

part of them. When Mr. Sumlin came to London to the sessions Mr. Clapton took him to his storage space and asked him to choose any guitar he wanted. Mr. Sumlin chose a Telecaster.

He was a true blues giant. Here's another pretty cool thing. Jimi Hendrix opened his set at Monterey playing Mr. Sumlin's riffs in "Killing Floor" and that was also one of the last songs Mr. Hendrix performed.

Mr. Richards has done much in a low key way to help blues guys. It's one of the reasons I love and respect him.

In 1965, I'd have bet money that those words would never have been uttered. But Keef and Mick have certainly done the right thing by helping lay Mr. Hubert to his rest.

It only takes a few listens to Howlin' Wolf songs before you can spot the Hubert Sumlin licks in early Stones recordings and Creedence hits. Jimmy Page owes Mr. Hubert a thing or two as well.
