Just saw "I am sam" With Sean Penn

I dont like movies like this because they make me so emotional i get too uncomfortable but i had to watch this one..

If you dont know what its about, Sean is a mentally handicapped guy fightin for the custody for his 7 year old daughter.

I'll fourth or fifth it- Sean Penn absolutely deserved the Oscar. I think Hollywood was overcompensating for all the criticism they had been getting about giving Oscars disproportionately to whites.

Don't get me wrong- Halle Berry, without question, deserved the Oscar for Monster's Ball. But Denzel- he was alright and it was an alright movie. Just not Oscar material.

He'll get one, I think. His problem is that he's not really part of the schmoozing and lobbying that goes on. I've not seen this film, so I can't comment on his performance.

The Academy has a history of "making things right", which I appreciate to a point. They screwed Whoopi for the Color Purple, she gets one for Ghost. They screwed Denzel for The Hurricane, he gets one for Training Day. They never gave Charlie Chaplin one, they give him a "special" one.

It's more of this "The person who we think should win, wins." Or the person whose turn it is or whatever. We seem to have let go of the "Let the best man win" principle.

I had forgotten about The Hurricane. That was a really good movie, so maybe they were making up for that, too. :shrug:

Actors who play retarded or slow people shouldn't win awards. It's a really easy thing to imitate.

Plus the movie on a whole wasn't that great, not one of the best Sean Penn movies I've seen. And I like Sean Penn.

it is not so easy to convey the sense of confusion that they fight to overcome daily. The ones I have seen deserve some kind of medal for not giving up. Sean Penn is this country's greatest actor, and this was an excellent movie.

Not to mention the best soundtrack!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and it was a one of a kind movie, but it didn't try to express what DD people have to go through - in a realistic way. Most live their lives with assistance from others, get frustrated, get happy, get confused - but they respond to love like you wouldn't believe. They can tell when someone truly cares about them.

SlingBlade was a good movie - better than good - but it didn't express as I Am Sam did, what people go through and how they react.

but he had a great screenplay and great actors around him. Even the momma (sorry, can't remember her real name, but know she's not around anymore) and the stage-left characters did a great job. A memorable movie.

The actors who do it well make it look easy. I think it would be extremely difficult to make it believable.

Do you guys remember the scene when Sam is speaking with two guidance counselors or social workers? He draws a parallel between what they are trying to tell him and Yoko Ono?

Something to the effect of:

Everybody always blames Yoko Ono for splitting up the Beatles, but in reality, John and Paul were were growing apart and they wanted to try new things. Annie says you can first hear it on the White Album. It wasn't Yoko's fault.

They give him blank stares, but I knew exactly what he meant. I first saw the movie with 2 pretty straight-laced friends. I said out loud, sympathizing with Sam, "Ohhhh. They aren't Beatles fans." :-(

My friends looked at me and laughed- I think one called me a hippie.

and unlike certain others on this thread, i think accurately portraying mentally handicapped people must be quite a feat... some of the best acting i've seen (dustin hoffman/rain man and leonardo/gibert grape) involved these characters...

cliche-ridden films I've ever seen. Typical man vs. the machine type of the thing. Of course the little girl was beautiful and a genius, and all the lawyers were just heartless. I could barely stand to finish it.

the story dragged in feature length. Very drawn out.

The little girl is amazing though. Reminds me of a young Drew B.

(She was also in that alien/ufo miniseries and is in another upcoming film.)
