everything begins in CA and this would be a great thing!

What do the rest of you think? Scary precedent is the only negative I can thing of ...

3. The petition I had worked on...
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 07:39 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
was taken directly from the Davis CA recall petition and altered a bit where appropriate:

"PETITION FOR RECALL

TO THE HONORABLE F. James Sensebrenner, Jr., Chairman, and John Conyers, Ranking Member of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on the Judiciary"

Pursuant to the spirit of the United States Constitution and free democracy, we the undersigned registered and qualified electors of the United States of America, respectfully state that we seek the recall and removal of George W. Bush holding the office of President, of the United States.

We demand an election of a successor to that office. President of the United States.

TO GEORGE W. BUSH:
Pursuant to the spirit of the United States Constitution and free democracy, the undersigned registered qualified voters of the United States of America, hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall petition and that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of President of the United States, and to demand election of a successor in that office. The grounds for the recall are as follows:

Gross mismanagement of the United States finances by repeated tax cuts and policy implementation geared towards the enrichment of the top financial tier and corporations at the expense and suffering of the remaining 90% of the American people. Lying about the reasons for and conducting an illegal invasion of Iraq which needlessly endangers our men and women of the armed forces and makes us less safe. Tragically ignoring pre-9/11 security warnings by foreign and domestic intelligence sources about a possible imminent terrorist strike. Threatening our planet and very survival by severely undermining important environmental protections.

The printed names of the proponents are as follows: The People of the United States of America

Each of the undersigned states for himself/herself that he or she is a registered and qualified elector of the United States of America.

RETURN PETITIONS TO PROPONENT: The People of the United States of America"

A few things --

The original download had an instructions page that went with it on who can sign and who can circulate. The petition and instruction sheet should reflect what is eventually decided about underage voters/non-registered voters.

The opening to Sennsenbrenner and Conyers was suggested by DagmarK as they are the heads of the committe who would start impeachcment proceedings. As mentioned by another poster on the other thread, ff this is a recall, then maybe it might be approprite to just simply address to Bush directly and leave out any middle man -- from the US People to Mr. Bush. What does everyone think?

I feel it is important to somehow address those who would like to sign but cannot under the CA rules. Whether that is solved by ignoring the CA rules altogether and allowing everyone to sign the petition or making up a Declaration of Solidarity for those folks, I think it needs to be solved. Thoughts?

Here is a link to the original Davis recall petition to see what it looked like and have something to work from:

4. Perhaps we don't need to follow Cali 100%.
Why shouldn't all Americans, hell and furners too, be able to sign the Recall petition?

Perhaps boxes could be checked to distinguish:

1. Registered Voter.

2. Unregistered American >18.

3. <18 American.

4. Citizen of the World.

Fact is that, since we're Non-Binding and simply looking to make an impact, we don't have to follow one crazy state's rules to the "T".

Just the fact that we're shooting for 12,000,000 separate and unique "signatures" is enough I think to knock the socks off the public.

Remember that there are millions of Americans that aren't registered to vote so excluding such a disaffected group seems like an unnecessary hobbling to me.

This needs to be both weighty as well as fun and inclusive.

I think it's clear from the responses by under 18ers on the two threads that they would like to participate but are stopped from doing so due to the CA rules. We don't need no stinkin' rules! ;)

As I mentioned in GD, I think the younger generation has the most at stake here and should have their opinions shared.

If you wanted to make that chance, I think it would be easy to do in the petition body.

On edit: Yes to the non-registered as well, though I hope signature gatherers would hand them a voter registration card when those folks signed. :)

It's not like there'll be a certification.

Sure we want to minimise cheating but since it's "Political Theatre" we're not beholden to so many restrictions.

7. Unconstitutional. It has to be impeachment for high crimes & misdemeanors
not a recall. And we certainly have him on high
crimes and misdemeanors...lies, lies, and more lies
committing us to war on false informations, squandering
5 trillion dollars surplus and putting us into 11 trillion
dollars debt, etc etc

forget recall, although I wonder if you could recall Rmsfeld
and Ashcroft. But Pres and Vp constitutionally can only be
removed by impeachment or casket.

9. It's a "Non-Binding" Recall.
Political Theatre.

A massive "F*CK YOU!" to BushCo.

It has many purposes but the actual "removal" is not derived from the 12,000,000 signatures.

12. I take JanMichael's idea to...
be a direct from-the-people-to-Bush action. Since this is a symbolic gesture, I feel the intend of a recall is very appropriate, even though it is not allowed under the US Constitution.

It's about saying "Hey, if we could, we WOULD!"

Yeah, maybe it would be better to put these energies into the impeachment effort - impeachment would mean more public hearings, more facts coming to light.

" "discuss amongst yourselves," which clearly indicates "screw you all.....talk all you want 'amongst yourselves but not with ME'...here's your damn ACTIVISM thread that I have been forced to provide....meanwhile "I" will be carrying on with "my" project."

Saturday Night Live and the wonderful Mike Myers doing his mother-in-law on "Coffee Talk", otherwise you would have seen humor in which it was posted. Folks asked for an Activism thread and I stepped up and made one. Excuse me for being efficient.

As for the rest of your post, hmm, okay.

Now, there's work to be done.

On edit: the one thing I do want to address is this -- on the original thread I voluntered to rewrite the CA petition, to host a delivery site, to post a new thread to GD, and to help gather a contact list. And that is what I have done. Anything else I wrote were opinions, ideas, and arguements for or against ideas. I also repeatedly credited JanMichael with this idea and asked for volunteers to step up and help where they could, and pass on ideas. If that's reflects the attitude of a "dictor" in your books, so be it.

Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 11:46 AM by DagmarK
I expressed my opinion on that.......'

But certainly didn't derail the idea that perhaps that question AMONG OTHERS should be on the table for serious consideration BY a steering committee.

THAT thread and all these threads should serve as simple brainstorming...... NOT the ultimate conclusion about anything.

I don't care if my ideas are used or not used. I care that ONE PERSON is adopting or vetoing the ideas without any manner of democracy about it......That's the only way I know to get the VERY BEST ANSWER to any question, no matter what the final result is. JanMichael made it clear that the volunteer committee gets its ideas from threads much like this.....they go over it......come to an idea about the best answer and THEN THROW IT OUT to the community again for discussion. EVERYONE would be involved.

Only then can it be coined a GRASSROOTS democratic process......

LORD......is the entire democratic party this disorganized? Well, that explains A LOT about how fascism has taken over in this country. No fuckng wonder.

20. i don't understand the need for a committee
by having a committee you're taking away the We The People because it will those on the committee who'll get to decide the approach to take.
it was you who suggested turning this idea into a full scale Org or Pac-- i assume this where the steering committee comes in.
ask JanMichael if you can coopt his idea and do it, start a org based on his idea.
but as i said in the other thread, it takes money and resources. the Name recognition alone held by already established orgs could help this get off the ground a lot quicker.

i think working it out in the threads is a fine idea.

if someone has a skill or idea to contribute it can be discussed right here.

"by having a committee you're taking away the We The People because it will those on the committee who'll get to decide the approach to take."

Okay.....instead of a committee of volunteers.....we will get just ONE PERSON making the decisions. How is that better???

Never mind.......I will await JanMichael's

It isn't that I want any particular idea I have put forth put into action. That's not it at all. It's the PROCESS for determining what goes and what doesn't go. It is a travesty to not capitalize on the brainstorming abilities of a number of people and just let ONE PERSON veto or implement. Hashing things out in threads serves only to feed that ONE PERSON. Why does this feel like a corporate board room to me???

Some of the dates may have already occurred or may be a bit late, but I think this is a true motherlode for those who want to get something done!

I can handle the SF/Bay Area signings -- alas, most of them are on the Left Coast or the mid west. Volunteers anyone?

25. As I said...
"Here is a listing of book signings that signatures of those standing in line or on the way to the bookstore could be discreetly gathered."

I have been hit up standing OUTSIDE of many Bay Area bookstores for signatures and the handing out of pamphlets, which is what gave me the idea.

If done correctly, I can't see why it wouldn't work. If a store asked you to move from the front of their premisis, them moving down the block a bit could be an option.

16. my question is this,
how soon would we like this to happen?

because the ways that are being discussed here could take a while.

when the petition is done being written up posted it on a website and allow for numerous sigs on the hard copy. to do anthing else is $$$$ in paper. approach sites/orgs like MoveON United for Peace and Justice
Working Assets etc, etc, to promote or at least mention the petition is their e-mails to members.

Jan Michael had a good idea of contacting the NAACP,etc, for those persons who do not have internet access. that's a keeper imo.

may be all this has already been discussed.
with the disturbance in the other thread i didn't fully read through it.

peace

18. I think that would be a great approach...
There are so many existing groups that can be utilized with websites, email lists, membership numbers.

You are so right, there are still so many folks who don't have Internet access -- I imagine they could be reached by volunteers taking copies of the downloaded petition directly to the streets and organizations.

There are so many opportunities to reach those folks -- book signings, political theatre events, rallies, protests, lectures, local veterans' meetings, local political meetings/meet-ups off all political affiliations, community parades/fairs, college campuses -- those are just a few ways I can think of off the top of my head.

I would hope the website has an area dedicated to letting folks who want to volunteer know the ways they can get the petition out.

17. Also from the other thread...
JanMichael and Nostjami were discussing the use of downloadable, hardcopy petitions and online capability to sign the petition.

I think there was consensus that hard copies made a bolder impression.

A question: is it possible to make a hardcopy of a petition that was signed online?

I think having both options would be great -- I just don't know enough about the technical stuff to be any help.

21. IF JanMichael gives me the nod, I will back off.
If he says he doesn't want to take his idea back from HHNF.....then I will respect that and put this whole thing on my ignore list and genuinely wish y'all the best with it only because it is such a fantastic idea and one whose time is overdue.

BUT, my prediction is that all of HHNF's ideas are good, if not great......but they are not going to bring in 12 million signatures. Her system is designed for information dessemination...which is great if you have a story or an article that you want to send throughout the internet world. But it isn't designed for a successful RETURN of 12 million signatures.

The short-sightedness astounds me as much as the lack of TEAM spirit. And that's a crying shame.

you keep accusing me of taking over JanMichael's idea, hijacking the project, being the only one to make decisions, and essentially telling everyone here "my way or the highway".

Would you please point me to the areas I actually did/said any of that?

I have only done what I voluntered to do, asked others to step in and help with skills, ideas, resources and tried to keep the threads bumped and energized.

This is NOT "my" project, it never was and it never should be.

But I am the type of person who steps in when things need doing and makes it happen. I have ideas and express them, and argue ideas or positions I think are incorrect.

BTW, if I had really wanted to take over this project I would have had the pettion up on a website and ready for download by last night and not looked back.

30. Back to regularly scheduled programming...
I just thought of another possibe way to get info/links out. SF's Chronicle features two columnists Harley Sorrenson (I think that's the wrong first name) and Mark Morford who has been very outspoken in their criticism of Bush et al.

Are there columnists in your local press that you think could be good choices for asking that that they cover or provide a link for the petition?

Veterans for Peace. We have chapters ALL over the US (just officially signed up so yippee I can say WE now!) and can help get this out there. Vets are already out there in the streets with "Bring Them Home" signs and very vocally speaking out against Bush. Tons of courage there and ready to use it for such a good cause.

These guys also have a ton of media contacts. Several of them have highly regarded and frequented web-sites.

Will Pitt comes to mind also. Counterpunch definitely.

I think these could be a good start, I have contact emails/numbers for these and another 70 or so.

Will Pitt -- of course! -- good catch. Perhaps, if he's asked really nicely, he could carry a few around with him for his appearances and generate signatures and hits to the eventual website.

We at CAF are immensely proud of the association, and we benefit enormously just from day-to-day opportunity to exchange ideas with this writer, social critic, and moral philosopher."

39. Some thoughts moved over from old thread
I've developed a first pass of a petition. I've written two versions of the preamble. One is a fairly straight-forward copy of the Davis petition. The other contains a satire of a "response" from bush the lesser. I got rid of most of the official signature gatherer verbiage.

There's a link to them posted on the front page of my music site for your perusal: http://tinyurl.com/jz5c. There's a link to an html version of the petition followed by larger type of the two preambles (so it can be read). There's also a link to an .RTF version of the same thing that can be downloaded. I haven't had a chance to convert them to PDF. I'll do that tomorrow and post the PDFs.

I'm thinking that our task is easier than some may think. We probably need;

1) Petition(s) - Anyone who wishes should give it a shot and we'll post them (Maybe have a vote -- but we want something that people can start using at events soon).
a) Does it really matter that the petitions are the same?
b) Just so that there are 10 signatures on each to ease counting.
c) A motif or style or logo would be fun so that people could
start recognizing the "Prank". We could create posters, etc.
using the motif.
d) a web site - (a very easy part for me)

2) P.O. Boxes and/or addresses to receive them.

3) Storage place(s)

4) Develop a delivery plan;
a) Have them all sent here and then across country?
b) Regional collection points and then a trek to Wash? (I like this)
c) Any other ideas?
d) The more publicity, the better

5) Press Releases and Publicity ASAP. Spokesperson(s).

6) Have fun with it, damn it!

More stray thoughts:

Dog the recall campaign -- solicite people to have the petition at any debates, appearences, etc. of the 180 or so people running for Davis' job (as well as Davis).

People can make up names and addresses. It doesn't matter whether it's real people or not. We just want 12,000,000 names in someone's handwriting (not the same person, that would be very tiring).

We could make it clear that we're not going to use any information on the forms for anything else -- no salesperson will call? Of course, what bush and asscroft do with them is up to them. I, for one, don't mind padding my FBI file a little.

IMHO, the "paper" is irrelevent. It's the publicity that's important, the spoof, the humor, and the tie in with the Davis Recall while it's in the news. The logistics will take care of themselves. We could post a dozed petition forms and let people use whichever one they like -- it's not legal or binding so who cares?

jackson's post demonstrates to me that there are numerous "deadly serious" attempts at impeaching, indicting, recalling all kinds of people. We need this kind of prank to rise above the noise but put the issues in front of the people. Mainly the bush cabal's lying, stealing, murder and usurption of Constitutional Rights.

Ok, sports fans, I've converted a couple of different versions of petitions on a new skeleton website. You can get there with http://tinyurl.com/k6z5

Anyone who has any other ideas for the verbiage (especially the crimes) please post them here. If you have your own version of a petition in M$ Word, Excell, Foxpro, Open Office, WordPerfect, etc. etc. send them to me at RecallBush@chetgardiner.com and I'll post them too.

Time to have some fun. I'm going to take some along to a gig my friend Dave Lippman's playing in Marin tomorrow night (www.davelippman.com).

Keep smiling...

48. Petition wording...thoughts/suggestions needed -
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 02:44 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
There were some points JanMichael brought up on the other thread that I think are important to look at. He suggested that the petition not be an exact replicate of the Davis CA version, but be tweaked to take into consideration those under voting age, those unregistered, and those not citizens who would like to sign on.

I was thinking about that last night and I think there is a very easy fix for that.

In the opening of the petition, instead of just saying "the undersigned registered voters hereby give notice", how about using JMs idea of something like "the undersigned registered California voters, United States citizens, American youth, military veterans, and World Citizens hereby give notice".

It's a blanket statement that covers just about everyone and requires no boxes to be checked. It could be phrased a bit more elegantly, I'm sure, but I think it accomplishes what it needs to. Thoughts?

I just looked at the "humorous" version with a Bush response -- I think it's a keeper! Take a peek at it and let us know what you think. :)

69. Question, HHNF:
Respecfully, I would like "World Citizens" removed.

Although I 'get' the desire to make this political theater a la Abbie Hoffman, I want it limited to: "the undersigned registered voters, United States citizens and residents, American youth, military veterans of the United States Armed Forces hereby give notice"

Thanks for your consideration on any or all of the above!

50. About discussion.
The idea of a "recall petition" is a simple idea and does NOT need a whole lot of discussion.

What it does need is a whole lot of action.

I have a personal goal of getting at least a thousand signatures.

Where do I send the completed forms?

I'll post a final version of the recall petition here for folk to look at and give the thumbs up or thumbs downs. I'll PM this folks who have really taken interest in the wording of the document and ask them to drop by and let everyone know their thoughts.

Hopefully, once it is okayed, we can move on to the next step.

Using many of the suggestions made here and on the other threads, here is what I hope will be the last version of the petition. Please read it over and reply to the post with a thumbs up or down. If you see something that needs changing and vote thumbs down, please note what you're are seeing and how it can be changed.

"PETITION FOR RECALL

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO CIRCULATE RECALL PETITION. TO THE DISHONORABLE GEORGE W. BUSH:
Pursuant to the spirit of the United States Constitution and free democracy, the undersigned registered California voters, United States citizens, American youth, military veterans, and World Citizens hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall petition and that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of President of the United States, and to demand election of a successor in that office.

The printed names of the proponents are as follows: The People of the United States of America and the World

Each of the undersigned states for himself/herself that he or she is interested in the welfare of the United States of America.

The answer of the officer sought to be recalled is as follows: IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION, IT MAY LEAD TO a safer, cleaner, happier world. Your civil rights and freedoms may be restored. If you ever get rich, more of your money may be taken from you by the government in order to help the less fortunate. In addition, the military of the United States may be unable to occupy regions of the world in the interest of Global Corporate Capitalism. We know what's best for you."

59. I've Posted It
I've posted your latest version as a PDF file on the website: http://tinyurl.com/k6z5. The first link on the main page is to your latest post.

This is interesting too -- got it from Proud P. this AM: http://www.dailyhog.com/Action_Figure.htm. Note the pretzel.

Folks can start circulating the petition now if they wish. There's no need for explicit directions since it's not legally binding, right? As for where to send them, we should setup at least one P.O. box (in S.F.?) to start and the rest will fall in place as we determine how to deliver them.

It seems that the Recall Election date is in doubt still but soon after that vote might be a good time to deliver the shrub recall petitions, nez paz?

If anyone can host the website, please let me know. I'd be happy to maintain it (I have NetObjects Fusion -- it's very quick and easy), I just need the information I need to FTP the site contents to the host. I'd also be glad to get and pay for the URL and hosting for this effort, if needed.

That needs addressing ASAP.

There have been suggestions that there be several locations around the country for folks to send the completed petitions to -- how does everyone feel about that?

Are there folks who can volunteer a post office box?

If that is the way to go, I can handle a box here in SF.

If we can't get various locations around the country, I can take everything here in CA, if it's needed.

I was asking about where to accept the return of the signed petitions to gather and house them BEFORE the big delivery to Bush & Co.

It has been suggested to have locations across various regions to house the gathered petitions unti they could be brought to the final delivery place.

I think that's doable, we just have to have some folks who want to volunteer.

I did design the text on the home page to be full justified...it should have a straight margin on the left and right. Is that what you're talking about? If it's too disturbing, it's an easy change.

If we're lucky, the hard copy versions will be as prevalent as those great bush bucks.

What general part of the country are you in? Do you have a friend who can mail you one copy (that you can photo copy).

Or, copy the PDF file for the petition to a floppy disk and take it down to your local computer store or Kinko's to get hard copy without having to buy a printer.

87. PROGRESSIVE MAJORITY Recall Effort!
Just heard on CNN that the group Progressive Majority will be launching a Recall Bush campaign tomorrow! I guess great minds think alike. :)

I trooped over to the website and didn't find any info on it yet, but hopefully tomorrow we will see their proposal. If it's good, I would be happy to throw my energies into helping them by generating DU support.

Whatcha think, folks?

93. BIG PROBLEMS...
I went to the site and there is NO mention of what they are going to do with the signed petitions -- are they going to be send to Washington or what?

Also, they have no downloadable version of the petition, which leaves out a huge section of the public who would like to sign but don't have access to a computer. But they DO have a downloadable donation form.

Is this really about presenting a petition to Bush or is this just a fundraising tool for a PAC and gathering info on folks to send future emails?

I fear that the idea of a recall petition is just a tool to get folks to the website -- it's really about the $$$ and the creation of a donor database.

I hope I'm wrong -- I wrote to ask them to address my questions and will post any response I get.
