By actual count, three hundred and fifty people and one giant rat turned out on Labor Day in Richfield to protest the presence of George W. Bush in Northeast Ohio.

The people were Union workers and staffers, anti-imperialist and peace activists, environmentalists, Green, Revolutionary Communist, and Democratic Party activists, and just people who hate Bush. The Cleveland Local of the American Postal Workers Union brought a whole bus full, proving that "neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night.....". You get the picture, and rain it was.

The rat was great. Inflated, two stories tall, looming over us in the park, looking smug, well fed, and very rat like - need I say Bush?

The Ohio AFL-CIO initiated the protest. Unhappy that Bush was coming and VERY miffed that the Operating Engineers Union had offered their hospitality to him they put out the call. Of course the authorities in typical Amerikan fashion moved the rally a mile further away from the original location which had been next door to the Operating Engineers.

The people who responded were from way beyond Union circles. The Labor message of "jobs" and "the right to organize" was joined with "Bring the Troops Home Now!", "Where Are the Weapons of Mass Destruction?", and varied other creative slogans and signs. Everybody appreciated each others' points of view and it all added up to a torrent of public opinion for a different kind of world.
