10. Most of the Leadership for AL is now
from the Korean War. I expect the organization will change once the Viet Nam Vets are in leadership positions BUT I could be wrong.

15. Buddy Poppies are the VFW...but some of them are vociferous in their
support of the war.

In any case, they should know better, this war is a sham, and for combat vets to go with what the admin is screeching about, should make them all ashamed for not learning the lessons of the past...:(

4. The American Legion was also hostile to returning Viet Nam Vets.

I have absolutely no use for that organization. None whatsoever. Never have; never will. (The VFW is a bit better - and better fish fries, too.)

5. I'm a veteran but I belong to no veterans groups
Do you really think they care that veterans outside there club disagree with them? I sort of doubt it.

7. they do
their numbers are falling precipitously. Most of the members are WWII vets and 2000 of them die every (day?) (week?) See my post below.

6. before I read this
I'd already gone to the website and told them this was a good reason I'd never join the organization. And then gave them a piece of my mind.

8. My email to the AL.
"The American Legion will stand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops, or worse, endanger their lives by encouraging terrorists to continue their cowardly attacks against freedom-loving peoples," Thomas Cadmus, national commander.

This statement is why I won't be part of your organization. When you chastise those fighting for the freedom to speak out, for the patriotic right to hold leaders accountable, to stand up for my fellow soldiers who follow the orders of the Commander in Chief regardless of personal feelings and those who will speak truth to power you are no patriot and do not speak for me or the rest of the veterans who stand for truth.

Sir, I respectfully suggest you take your Legion and shove it.

9. Done. This is what I wrote to them
As a Vietnam veteran I want to express my very great disagreement with your stand against the anti war protestors and the media’s need to tell the American people the truth about the war in Iraq.

It is the right of every citizen to petition his or her government. The people also have a right to be told the truth about the actions of their government. As citizens of a democracy, they need to be as informed as possible so that they can make correct decisions.

Both of these rights are ones that you say the troops in Iraq are fighting to protect. The real truth is that these rights are not being threatened by an enemy in Iraq but are being threatened right here in the United States by people like you and the actions you have taken in opposition to people exercising their rights.

The real reason we are in Iraq has nothing to do with the so-called “war on terror.” That term is used by the administration as a propaganda tool to gain the support of the American people for the war. That war is a war of opportunity. As stated by PNAC on June 3, 1997, “Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?” That is the real reason we are in Iraq and it is a misguided reason that all Americans should rise up against in protest.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting and dying not for our freedoms but for the benefit of a few powerful individuals in this country. They are being sacrificed like lambs on the altar and it is time we brought them home.

The vast majority of Americans understand that they have been lied to and no longer support this war and the killing of our innocent children. If you really intend to support the best interests of the troops and not those of the administration you would join the protestors and demand that the troops be brought home now and this senseless war be stopped.

11. Anyone with a DD214
and a pocket full of cash can join the American Legion. They are quick to endorse the chickenhawks because most of them never served a combat tour themselves. If they did they would have joined the VFW instead.

Since Bush and Co. have been gutting the VA and veterans benefits I have seen the VFW come out with strong condemnations against this administration. I've seen little to no support coming from the American Legion.

I've been a lifetime member of the VFW for many years. There is no amount of money that could make me ever join the AL. They are so dense they don't realize that probably more than half of their members don't support this nonsense in Iraq.

13. My letter to these hypocrites
To Whom It may Concern.

As a veteran, I'm deeply offended by Tuesday's diatribe against political dissent Dissent is indeed patriotic! Have you not heard of the first amendment? What about the Boston Tea Party? Maybe they should have written a letter to the King!

Mistakes of the past? One of the most important lessons learned from the Vietnam war was the need to question our government and leaders who make questionable decisions? Lessons? The government lied then and lies now. Read the papers!

What's offensive is sending our children to die for a pack of lies. If you believe them, send your own children.

You should be ashamed.
