You must call for the immediate impeachment of President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and the relevant cabinet members based on their response to Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of New Orleans. His inaction, refusal of aid from other states and other countries, and the changes to FEMA and disaster response procedures show that Californians would be in grave danger of unnecessary loss of life in our inevitable next earthquake, other natural disaster, or a terrorist attack.
I don’t believe that their actions are the result of incompetence.
The Bush administration seems to be perfectly competent at the things they care about: fundraising, crafting and passing legislation to benefit the very wealthy and corporate America, giving lucrative government contracts to cronies, manufacturing a case for war against a nation that was no threat to us, coordinating their message with the right wing press and hounding any mainstream reporter who dares to act as a watchdog as our founding fathers envisioned, and smearing their political opponents with lies and distortions including members of their own party like John McCain.
They did and do all of these things with ruthless efficiency.
It is now painfully obvious that we cannot trust not only our long term well-being with them, which is being threatened by the cost in lives and money of the Iraq War, which is also generating near unanimous ill will toward us in the Arab World, but we can not trust them to protect us right now in the ways that we have taken for granted for decades from both Republican and Democratic presidents.
From the beginning, the Bush administration has been extremely attentive to the welfare of a handful of wealthy individuals and corporations at the expense of the rest of us. When that results in the loss of so many lives in such a short time as happened in New Orleans, they have moved from a different approach to governing to crimes against humanity.
If you fail to act in this matter, the American people can only conclude that we are not represented by our elected officials of either party. Your colleagues failure to deal honestly with us about the causes for the Iraq War has already pushed me far in that direction, in spite of your admirable actions on this and other issues.
The American people want a real democracy that functions in fact the way the Constitution says it functions in theory. We are not getting that. We are getting screwed and killed so corporations can pad their bottom line.
We need you to represent us, not Bechtel, Halliburton, and the oil companies.
