FRENCHVILLE - Two truckers based in this northern Maine town were forced to stop their rigs and abandon their trailers Wednesday on the Trans-Canada Highway in northwestern New Brunswick by a large group of Canadian truckers protesting high fuel prices.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported Wednesday afternoon that traffic was stopped completely on the highway at St. Jacques and St. Andre, New Brunswick, where hundreds of truckers had parked their rigs. Passenger cars and emergency vehicles are being allowed through the blockade.
Traffic was also slowed by protesters at four other locations in New Brunswick - Kedgwick and Saint Quentin on Route 17, Campbellton on the Van Horn Interprovincial Bridge between New Brunswick and Quebec, and at Tides Head on Route 134.
Dale Chamberland, manager of RF Chamberland Trucking Co. at Frenchville, said two of his vans are along the TCH near St. Jacques. His two truckers were allowed to return home bobtail, without trailers. <snip>
