Hey you guys. I've been helping out an organization called the Surfrider Foundation for awhile now and the Malibu Chapter has been gathering signatures to take to the California Coastal Commission on the following situation:
The infamous Jerry Perenchio got a permit to build a park next to the Malibu Lagoon (which feeds directly into the famous Malibu Beach) about 20 years ago from the CCC. He built a wall around the property and in secret built a private golf course instead. This golf course gives off a huge amount of pollutants into the lagoon, which then make their way to the beach. These pollutants not only cause environmental problems but are a health risk as well, as many of the local surfers can attest to. No one knew he'd done this until recently. Now, the Malibu Chapter of Surfrider has been going after Perenchio through the CCC to turn it back into the park it's permitted for, but Mr. Perenchio wants to get an after the fact permit for the course. He'll have million dollar lawyers and Surfrider can't compete with that. So they're hoping that getting about a thousand signatures will get the CCC involved in this mess.
We've been going around Southern California beaches getting people to sign and we now have an online petition as well. If you could sign it, we'd all REALLY appreciate it.
You don't have to be a California resident to sign. We had a family from Scotland sign. This is not just a CA issue. So here's the address to the petition and a BIG thanks to all of you for reading this. We're taking them down one step at a time ;)
