UTICA - Temperatures closing in on 90 degrees and high humidity has done little to dissuade more than 200 people from coming to Liberty Bell Park this afternoon to protest the appearance of Vice President Dick Cheney at a political fundraiser at Hotel Utica for Republican Congressional candidate and state Sen. Raymond Meier.
Representatives of groups as divergent as the Empire State Pride Agenda, a gay rights group, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, along with scores of anti-war demonstrators, filled the small park across from the hotel. There, they shared in chants such as “Stop the lying, stop the dying,” and were entertained by musicians singing songs filled with lyrics denigrating Cheney and the Bush administration.
To battle the heat, organizers handed out bottles of water while some people frolicked in the park’s large fountain.
