4. re: world can't wait
Am I the only liberal that is confused and disappointed by the lack of coordination by the major groups regarding their upcoming protests? We've got 6 weeks to the election and you'd think that we would be organized by now,...but NO. The World Can't Wait, the Answer folks, the United for Peace people and who knows who else, each have their own "this is the one you must attend" protest scheduled for some time between now and election day.

Would one coordinated massive event have been smarter, more effective and capable of having a real impact? Don't you think the right wing windbags will enjoy playing footage of a half dozen sparesly attended protests?

OK, this is my first post and I'm mad. so its time to go off the deep end:

At what point do we say “ENOUGH!” and finally drag our sorry asses out into the streets? Although many of you now comfortable in your overvalued homes would like to substitute kinder, gentler memories, the Vietnam War was not stopped by any letter writing campaigns or by voting former SDS leaders into Congress. The war was stopped by a constant and unrelenting series of direct actions that made it impossible for the country to ignore the war. Munitions trains were stopped in their tracks, recruiting stations were picketed and potential recruits dissuaded, ROTC programs were tossed off campuses and major intersections were shut down so businessmen were forced to think about something other than making money.

Those of us of a certain age can be excused for thinking that they have already done their share of the heavy lifting and it’s time for someone younger to carry the load. But what if the current generation is so brainwashed by MTV that they can only get worked up over designer clothes, expensive junk and other pathetic trappings of American life in 2006? Should the older generation just shake their heads, safe from any direct involvement in the war and happy in the knowledge that we’ll be the last ones to actually collect Social Security?

there, I feel better already.

7. Hi subway!
Welcome to DU! :hi:

My $.02, FWIW.....

I certainly agree with you, but another problem is that when there *are* protests, they are grossly underreported by the corporate media.

Another difference is that we currently do not have an actual draft (although we sure do have a "backdoor" one).

Another difference is that the people currently in power do not give a &%$# what we peons do, as they are getting a tighter grip by the day on communications, elections, and our lives.

That said, I certainly would like to see massive protests, and see them reported.

9. welcome ! !
a great first post! my name is ENOUGH on another board, started after the first non-election.

i am a firm believer in protests, whether covered by media or not. i think that we need to go to dc and be a presence there, and if we have to leave have someone in our place and return when we can. everyday it gets worse and worse. our leaders are not our leaders. even 'in the movement' they are not. we are if we go.

my husband and i are considering tag team protesting there, and will be looking for riders to share gas.

there is something going on at Norfolk VA on Sunday, btw.

5. Get Out And Vote
The turnout for the primary election was down from 2004 for Democrats in 39 states. Blogs, surveys, political Web sites, mean nothing if the Republicans keep control of Congress.

Impeachment is done by Congress. Free handouts to big oil companies are controlled by Congress. The homeless can be housed if the Congress stops the building of one more unnecessary aircraft carrier. The elderly can be helped by Congress. WARS ARE DECLARED BY CONGRESS. You name a cause, Congress has a hand in it. "Checks and Balances" applies to Congress and the 'ministrashin. Can you say nuklur?

All bloggers and political activists need to get their Democrat friends and family out in November to vote. Only 47 days left but that is still plenty of time. Give rides on Election Day if necessary. If we don't vote, we deserve what we get which will be at least two more years of bullshit.

Pass this on to all the blogs and Web sites you visit.

They're encouraging Democrats to get off their goddamn asses and do something OTHER than vote. There's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't need to be a circular fire squad all the time, right?

18. VOTE EARLY using Absentee Ballot......
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 11:53 PM by LetsThink
Then volunteer to work at your polling station on election day........

And / or organize a van pool to get folks without transportation to the poll so they can vote. Tell other folks who are caught without time to vote or who will be away on election day, about absentee ballots.

WE NEED ALL VOTES! WE NEED A GOOD TURN OUT !
