29 days and counting

In July, Democrats were asked to contact 100 voters before Election Day. Take a minute to evaluate your progress. If you haven't contacted any voters yet, it's time to get started. If you really want change, your vote isn't going to be enough. You've got to get out there and make sure people in your neighborhood are voting for Democrats.

Your first order of business should be making sure potential voters are registered. You can check the voter registration deadlines for your state on your state page.

Tell Your Boss You Need a Day Off
Start planning for Election Day by taking November 7th off work. You can't help get out the vote if you have other obligations. Take a minute to remind your boss that you are taking Election Day off

Contact your local party if you haven't already, and sign up to volunteer on Election Day.

If you can vote absentee, send in for your absentee ballot and make sure you vote ahead of time.

Today's action

Over 20 states allow some form of early voting before Election Day. In some states you may be able to vote up to a month before the day of the election. You can call your local board of elections to find out if early voting is available in your state or county. If it is, take advantage of it. Don't forget to tell your local friends and family that they may cast their votes before November 7.

Check to see if your state has early voting on your state page here:

One Last Try for Voter Registration

As long as the voter registration deadline for your state has not yet passed, do one final push to register your friends and neighbors who support the Democratic agenda.

1. You can check your state's voter registration deadline on your state page.

2. Voter registration forms are available at your local post office, library, or county elections office. Or, click here to register to vote online.

3. Remind your circle to register to vote. Send an email to unregistered friends urging them to register.

Set the Record Straight

If Republican candidates in your area are airing ads attacking Democrats, do some research and send a rebuttal to the editor of your local paper.

Need some starting points for your research?

1. National Democratic Party. Information for Governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House candidates can be found on individual candidate websites. Click on your state on our election map to find website links for various top of the ticket candidates.

2. Your State Party. You can find candidate information on your state party website by visiting your Democrats.org state page.

3. State Legislature Information. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee has links to information for state races in all states.

Get Out of Town Friends to Vote

Call or email your friends in different towns or states, and make sure there is nothing standing in the way of them voting for Democrats on November 7. If they have problems getting to the polls, use the following lists to help them find a way to vote.

Things You'll Need to Know Before You Contact a Friend

1. Election Dates. Voter registration and absentee ballot request deadlines, and if/when the state has early voting. You can find this information on their state page on Democrats.org.

2. Poll Hours. Hours the polls are open in your friend's state. The voting hours mandated by statute for 39 states are listed here. All states are listed on the U.S. Election Assistance Commission sheet that hasn't been updated since late 2004. Either source can and should be verified by checking with the state's Election office. Contact information can be found on the state page, near the bottom of the light blue Election 2006 box.

3. State Party Contact Information. Phone number or website of the state party. Contact information can be found on the state page, near the bottom of the light blue Election 2006 box.

4. County Democratic Party. To find the phone number or website of appropriate county Democratic Party, first you've got to know in what county your friend's hometown is located. That can be found with a simple google search of the city, state and the word "county." Once you've got the county name, an additional google search can provide you with contact information and potentially a website.

Things You Can Suggest to a Friend Who Can't Get to the Polls

1. Early Voting - Often when early voting is available there are weekend dates and times that can work for people unable to go during the week.

2. Absentee Voting - If your friend's state allows absentee voting, your friend can fill out a ballot when convenient and then just drop it in the mail.

3. Local Party Ride to the Polls - Your friend can use the contact information you found above for the state and county Democratic Party to call a local party to arrange for a ride to the polls on Election Day.
