Alaska's world-famous Katmai brown bear is in trouble. Because of the state's free-wheeling hunting regulations, this iconic bear is being over-hunted in Katmai Preserve during hunting season. Lax regulations are leading bears to be harvested beyond sustainable levels. But the bear's troubles are only beginning. The state of Alaska will soon allow bear hunting in yet another portion of Katmai National Park and Preserve for the first time in 22 years, eliminating a safe haven for these creatures.
TAKE ACTION:
http://ga1.org/campaign/katmai_bear?rk=XdNEDJ61XzhsE Katmai is bear country. But this continued over-hunting could soon change all that. Congress has even recognized the significance of this special place and directed Katmai National Park to maintain "high concentrations of brown/grizzly bears." Unfortunately the state of Alaska is living by its own rules--and it's costing us dearly.
The Alaska Board of Game is set to make a decision on the fate of the Katmai Bear--and it is critical that you make your voice heard. Urge the board to protect this iconic bear by enforcing what Congress mandated long ago--a healthy bear population in Katmai National Park and Preserve. The state must control the hunt in sustainable numbers and ensure that protected areas remain that way. Take action!
