Environment expected to take centre stage

An aboriginal protest over government handling of forest lands greeted politicians returning to the legislature Monday for the beginning of the spring sitting ...

About 100 Kwakiutl people from northern Vancouver Island protested the recent decision to remove land owned by Western Forest Products from the company’s tree farm licence. Band leaders said they were not adequately consulted before the removal, which allows the company to develop the property.

Aboriginal issues will again be prominent this spring, as the first-ever treaty reached under the B.C. Treaty Commission process is expected to be put to the test. Members of the Lheidli T’enneh band near Prince George are scheduled to vote on their treaty on March 30, and if passed there it would go to the legislature for a ratification vote, then to the House of Commons in Ottawa for final approval ...
