Start making plans - Major Protests in NYC the week of Aug 29th, 2004
REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

I've already talked with a few other DUers and we are thinking of doing something with a national DU gathering the week of the Republican Convention in NYC. No need for us to gather the permits for protesting - sevearl organizations are already planning major demostrations throughout the week of the protests.

I'm hoping to form a committee of several DU members to help organize our contingency to the Counter-Convention in NYC. Of course we'll have to deal with the struggle of finding accomadations so that hopefully we can all be together in the same hotel during the week.

To read more about the Activities of August 29th please check out these weblinks:

I have a feeling this week of protesting will rival anything talked about in the history books. So don't miss out in history - plan to join us in NYC for the Counter Convention 2004!!!

5. Good on ya, goobergunch! I'm hoping to talk my sister into
going. We went to the Feb15th, 2003 Protest in NYC and it was once in a life time, Monumental!

2. An offer for fellow DUers
I live in a big house with 5 close friends in the NYC area (in South Yonkers, a few hundred yards from the City line -- less than 1 hour by public transportation from downtown). We can squeeze in 4-5 more people here... If anyone wants a place to stay, send me a DU mail.

7. Don't worry about it just yet
I mean, it is 10 months away and we're still in the planning stages!

Thanks for the consideration though!!!

4. Hey LynneSin
I don't think I'll make it to New York City -- August in NYC? Oh god, that sounds hot & muggy & horrid to me! -- but I'm sure our group will plan something here in Laramie.

Mostly, this is just to say hi to you, LynneSin. I was just thinking the other night that I hadn't "seen" you around for a while and I was missing one of our more thoughtful bright lights. :hi:

9. You couldn't be more wrongheaded
The other day I mentioned the idea that everyone should stay home when the GOP slouches into NYC next August.

Instead of mounting pointless and disruptive protests we should organize in our local communities to educate and inform the voters about the issues, visit Veteran's Hospitals, clean up a park, hold a prayer vigil, perform random acts of civic virtue. If you really have to do something dramatic, stage a rock concert to raise money for the Democratic candidate.

Let the GOP play to an empty theatre.

Show them nobody cares.

That was the idea.

Since I mentioned it I've been hearing from people who saw some value in it, so here we go.

Right now its just a couple of people in Brooklyn's historic Coney Island but how much of America's history got its start in Brooklyn?

We'll see how far it goes.

More to come.

11. I totally disagree
Which will have more effect:

An empty NYC and undisrupted Republican Convention

Or 500,000+ converging on NYC to protest outside the convention. The Chicago protests in 1968 are still talked about in our school's history books. We can do better in 2004.

If we fail to show up it's like we're saying "we don't care - go ahead and have another four years"

We expect massive turnouts in NYC, this is the only way we'll get any coverage in the news. The idea of staying home and educating the local folks is nice - but we should be doing that now and until 2004. Why waste the greatest opportunity to make a difference by not showing up?

Join the NYC Counter Convention and let's make a difference!!!

10. Thanks for posting this
I'm filling out my request for vacation time for next year. I now know another week I need to pick. :D And since I just completed 10 years at my job, I get an extra week of paid vacation.
