Tell your Senators to support citrus freeze relief provisions in supplemental bill on floor

Senate Vote this week...Send your e-mail today!

The Fiscal Year 2007 Emergency Supplemental bill should reach the senate floor this week. Thanks to the hard work of Sens. Feinstein and Boxer, this bill includes millions in emergency assistance for California farmers and farm workers impacted by January’s freeze.

It’s been two and a half month's since January’s devastating freeze impacted thousands of lives. Approximately 28,000 citrus farm workers may be left jobless—just in Calif.’s San Joaquin Valley alone. These frozen out workers are having difficulty feeding their families and paying their rent or mortgages. These low paid workers who have very little savings are expected be out of work for the next 9 to 12 months. They desperately need this federal emergency aid to survive.

Please e-mail your senators today and tell them to support for Senator Boxer and Feinstein’s provisions in the emergency supplemental bill S. 965. Tell them it’s vital to provide relief for the tens of thousands of farm workers affected by the citrus freeze.

This situation is critical. Please send your e-mail today.

This January a freeze devastated California agriculture. The unprecedented temperatures in California destroyed $1.323 billion in crops and left thousands of citrus workers unemployed. Without supplemental emergency funds the impact of this freeze will be long lasting and severe for families that depend on farm work. Thankfully, Senators Feinstein and Boxer fought hard for the workers in California and added $100 million for small business and worker assistance funds in the supplemental appropriations bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee this week.

Please do all you can to ensure that this money remains in the supplemental appropriations bill.

This is the letter yo can edit.

For the past two months, farm workers and their children have been fighting to sustain livable conditions. The problem keeps growing, needs are escalating and financial assistance to help farm workers with basic living needs is nowhere to be seen in the horizon. Faith "esperanza" is a commodity that farm workers depend on every morning as they search for new work in a devastated area. The supplemental bill is an answer to these workers prayers.

I stand with the United Farm Workers and the UFW Foundation, and ask for your support and assistance to protect the emergency aid for small businesses, farm workers and their families, which is contained in the supplemental appropriations bill.
