COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The agency that runs the Statehouse grounds at first turned down a request for a permit for a Memorial Day weekend rally from a group of military personnel opposed to the war in Iraq, then reversed itself and will allow the event to proceed, a member of the group said Friday.
Teresa Dawson, coordinator of the central Ohio chapter of Military Families Speak Out, said she was first told by the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board that there would not be enough staff on May 27 to stage the event.
Dawson called again Friday and learned the group would get a permit after all and the event, called the "Appeal for Redress" walk of support "for brothers and sisters in arms," will proceed as planned, she said...
The group is asking troops opposed to the war to urge Congress to support a prompt withdrawal because "staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home," according to a statement the group released. It asked active troops and reserves to show up in uniform.
