I'm writing to invite you to participate in a conference call for scientists, engineers, and health professionals who have an interest in defending federal government science from political interference. You are receiving this invitation because you are a signer of the scientist statement on scientific integrity.
During the call, we'll brief you on the most recent ways in which science has been misused. We'll update you regarding our work with Congress this year, from assisting with federal agency oversight to advancing scientific integrity-related legislation. And we’ll share our plans to ensure that the next president shows leadership in restoring scientific integrity to federal policy making.
You have two dates from which to choose:
Tuesday, September 18 at 3:00 p.m. EDT

Please RSVP for the presentation on September 18 or September 27. You will be asked to register for the call by providing your name and email address. After you register, you will receive a confirmation email with the call-in information and the link for the web presentation.
What's at StakeOver the past few years, the Union of Concerned Scientists has worked with our partners to keep political interference in science on the public’s radar screen. We have provided evidence of this problem through federal agency scientist surveys and the A to Z Guide to Political Interference in Science. We've worked with the media and Congress to hold those who misuse science accountable for their actions. And with your help, we have convinced many members of Congress to become strong scientific integrity supporters.
Despite this progress, the manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal scientific information persist. What’s more, this blatant misuse of science has been supplemented by systemic changes that have the potential to sideline science indefinitely. For example, a recent presidential executive order places political appointees deeper inside federal agencies where they can more easily prevent “inconvenient” science from seeing the light of day.
What’s NextOn the conference call, you’ll learn how we plan to continue to document and expose political interference in science, push for incremental changes, and prepare the next president to repair the damage that has been done. And you’ll find out how you can help UCS make this a reality.
Space is limited, so please sign-up today! Thanks for helping us defend science from political interference.
Sincerely,
Michael Halpern

P.S. Are you an educator who is preparing lesson plans for the new academic year? To foster thoughtful discussions about the proper role of science in federal policy making, UCS launched a Scientific Integrity Curriculum Guide to help college-level and advanced high school instructors teach this complex subject.
