Smyrna students' Jena Six shirts violate dress code
By SCOTT BRODEN
sbroden@dnj.com

... "I don't feel like it was a dress-code violation," said Lynch, who's upset his grandson reported being sent to a holding room without an explanation. "It wasn't derogatory. They were wearing it as a support, not as a protest. It was handled wrong." ...

Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans said he was only aware that a white girl had violated the dress code by showing up with a "Free Jena Six" T-shirt at 10 a.m. Thursday.

"The administration told her and her mother that she would need to change her shirt," Evans said.

He said she was asked to change her shirt because earlier in the morning, there had been some racial comments made in the hallways by a handful of students, and some administrators had to break it up ...

1. Why is it that the schools
Think they need to create a perfect little society in order to educate?
It seems to me that having things as they are in the rest of society would be the best way to teach. That way you are teaching with real life and real society, not some phony one where every one is dressed nicely )what ever that is) and obeys all the rules and has "school spirit and supports the troo...I mean the fighting tigers or weasels or something of a sports team GO AARDVARKS111

How about a school with no rules, and no attempt to create any kind of social structure or nationalistic like spirit through sports.
the only requirement would be that you show up. do your work. and pass the test.
right now I can hear the howling that with lack of discipline it would be a mad house...Mot true if you gave the teacher absolute control of the class room so that if any one caused him trouble he could kick them out even permanently with no questions asked...The children would attend at the pleasure of the teacher.
I think it would be learning at a much higher level.

5. It has noting to do with charter schools
In fact charter schools would be unnecessary.
I am only talking about treating the kids in Hi Schools as if we trusted them instead of baby sitters. And that is exactly the age where they should be learning individual responsibility.

6. Not everyone would like your idea
Which is why there are charter schools. Different philosophies for different parents and educators. My kids like athletics. I think physical activity is important. I don't want your school.

7. I am well aware of that
There are a great number of people (adults) that are thrilled by high school football. And I have no problem with athletics Physical education should be a part of every school and all kids should have it.
But the problem comes when a class society is created where you have the football players and cheerleaders are in one click and the ones that can't or don't want to make the team become the outsiders and are expected to be the adoring fans of the sports hero. and the teachers mostly give there attention to the heroes and the message is that the rest are not good enough.
Education should not be about teaching kids that they are ether heroes or losers. If you are going to privatize any part of public education do it with sports teams and leave the education alone and allow the teachers to do the teaching of academic subjects.

3. Why does the school condone racism?
It would appear that the students that should been punished are the ones making the racist remarks.

4. They defuse the situation by disciplining the students because
of inappropriate behavior of other students?
