National days of solidarity with Venezuela are being called for Dec. 1st and 2nd by the Venezuela Solidarity Network, Hands Off Venezuela, and the Latin America Solidarity Coalition. WE NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION! Plan an educational event, show a movie, take to the streets--there are lots of ways to get the message out against US interference in Venezuela!
December 2nd marks the anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, a policy that declared the principle of US control over Latin America and the Caribbean. As such, it has been one of the cornerstones used to justify the US/Corporate Empire's assaults against the democratic choices of Venezuelans, as well as other peoples of the hemisphere. The US government has supported attempts to overthrow the elected government of Venezuela, and continues to do so. It wants to do to Venezuela what it did to Guatemala in '54, Chile in '73, and Haiti in '04--destroy a popular government and replace it with anti-democratic thugs.
THERE IS NO MORE IMPORTANT GIFT THAT PROGRESSIVES FROM THE US CAN GIVE TO THE VENEZUELAN PEOPLE AND TO THE WORLD THAN TO RESIST THE EMPIRE FROM WITHIN! This is what the NATIONAL DAYS OF SOLIDARITY WITH VENEZUELA are all about: resisting empire and magnifying our voices. By joining local actions together in nationally coordinated Days of Solidarity, we not only take a stand against Empire--we also help build the struggle for real democracy right here in the USA!
December is also a very important month for the people of Venezuela. It marks the anniversary of the election to the presidency of Hugo Chavez, and the ratification of the Bolivarian Constitution. This year, Dec. 2nd is the proposed date for Venezuelans to vote on critical constitutional reforms.
Venezuela is holding out hope to the world by showing us that neoliberalism and Empire can be resisted, and that participatory democracy can give real power to the people. Let's do our part in helping keep that hope alive! WHAT YOU AND YOUR COMMUNITY CAN DO We are asking communities to organize local and regional events in solidarity with Venezuela. Such events can take many forms! Film Showings, Solidarity Parties, Benefit Concerts, Vigils, Demonstrations, a Delegation Visit to Congresspersons and Senators, Lectures, Leafleting--all these are good ideas. Or maybe you have an idea that hasn't been tried before!
IF YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION WOULD LIKE TO PLAN AN EVENT--then please get in touch with us and let us know what you're doing so that we can list it on our website and include information in press releases we send out. Give us your contact information so that we can send you an Organizers Kit with useful information and ideas for your event--including our Speakers Bureau and Resources lists.
We are especially asking that people help us build our Emergency Response Network by downloading copies of the ERN sign up sheet, taking them to your Solidarity Day action, and then sending us the filled out forms.
