Three anti-war activists were convicted of trespassing and ordered to pay $50 fines today after a two-day trial in Denver County Court.
Raphael Eggers, 75, a retired Korean-War era veteran; Sue Gomez, 61, of Catholic Worker Community; and Merrill "Arnie" Carter, 52, who works with Denver's homeless, were represented by attorney Walter Gerash. The lawyer had argued that people have a responsibility — and a right — to try to stop what they see as an immoral war in Iraq.
The trio and other demonstrators occupied the senator's office Feb. 21 in lower downtown for several hours and asked to speak with Salazar ...
Gerash said Salazar's office is a public office paid for with tax dollars, which should give citizens the right to demonstrate and speak with their lawmakers.
