We decided to do this in the form of a viral email. There are two emails here - the second email is sourced, the first is not. Other than that, the two emails are practically identical. They both contain the exact same list of facts. Take your pick, depending on which you think will work best for you.

Our irritating Republican neighbour is always calling McCain a "liberal" and when I ask for specific things McCain has done that are even remotely liberal, he has no answers. On the LCV rating of 0%, I believe that he was ranked dead last specifically in 2007. There are people who are ranked lower overall (since there are so many Republicans with awful environmental records).
His being ranked last of all 535 members of congress was specifically in 2007:

It is still a fairly powerful statement-I just think it could be amended to include the fact that that was for 2007.


He has a pretty lousy rating overall but it is 24 or 27 or something like that-not quite 0. Ted Stevens probably has the 0% rating.

The 2007 scorecard is the most recent one (obviously 2008 isn't over yet), which means that the League of Conservation Voters currently ranks him dead last. The article I've sourced says, "...the League of Conservation Voters gave him a zero rating Thursday on its 2007 congressional scorecard -- making him the lowest-ranking lawmaker among all 535 members of Congress."

I've added the word "currently" to the sentence, I think that should cover it.

...is simple.

The personal stuff is at the beginning, and the policy related stuff is at the end. It should be the other way around.

People who are fans of McCain will see the first couple of items and then ignore the rest. They'll call it "sour grapes" or whatever, and then they'll never actually read the stuff at the end that REALLY matters. How many of the guys who get this forwarded to them have cheated on their wives, would LOVE to own 10 homes, or enjoy as good game of craps? They will think that stuff is irrelevant, and will ignore the rest.

Sad statement about human nature or not, the scandalous grabs the attention. Few can resist the foibles of the celebrated or a good ole case of self-righteous indignation over what they perceive as a personal attack on a hero...even if the email angers somebody, most will continue to read...

That said, anger at the beginning can sometimes bias the reader to the other facts contained within...but that usually won't stop them from reading the whole email. (gotta feed that indignation)


The odds are on the side of people reading the entire email..and the honest broker will consider the totality of what they've read.

And those who can't get beyond their anger?...well, they'll just go on the defensive ...and that's where you want them...on the defensive.

It needs a "hook", something that gives people on the 2nd rung of the chain motivation to keep passing it on, like "your nuts will shrivel up if you don't do exactly as I say"; otherwise, why won't a random mutation moran drop the Vietnam paragraph and replace "McCain" with "Obama" on the unsourced version to make it more viscerally appealing to people who read uncritically? Things that are true and/or can be looked up rarely go "viral", at least on Snopes, but you might be able to pass on a poison pill to freepers by wrapping it in a sickly candy shell (for instance replacing every footnote with a Bible verse).

She said that it's not the truth and that it was "sliced and diced" and that Democrats should be above this kind of thing and instructed me not to send her any more "crap" like this. I don't think that she actually checked any of the references.

I guess that some people just don't want to win. I'm tired of sticking to principles and losing. At this point there's too much at stake to rule out using tools like this. I'm not happy about it, but this is what works in the real world.

Scheunemann is a longtime GOP foreign policy specialist who has also worked on the staffs of former Senate Republican leaders Bob Dole (Kan.) and Trent Lott (Miss.) He was a board member of the neoconservative think tank, the Project for the New American Century, which often reflected the views of Bush administration hardliners.

Sure, they might see a stretched truth from an Obama ad here and there, but the lies from McCain-Palin on FactCheck.org beat out Obama 10:1! So in this election, an educated independent will be an Obama Democrat, hands down! The good news is, WE don't have to spin the truth to make our side look good! We just have to spread it!

This will only work if it is done in a way that it is known to the independent that this IS the truth, and not just another activist pushing their own view with their own sources of spun media.
