In Colombia, they reward soldiers based on how many kills they get. Because there aren't as many insurgents out there (Or never were that many insurgents to begin with), they've resorted to murdering villagers and saying that they attacked them.

It's gone pretty smoothly for them, that is until a soldier found out that one of the villagers they were going to murder was his own brother.

1. Columbia

The insurgency in Columbia began as an honest, genuine, attempt to overcome the power of the drug cartels.
They gained no government support and were co-opted into using the only methods that were available to them.
That is the same methods as the cartels were using. Kidnapping, murder, drug dealing for funds.
Soon the difference between FARC and cartel vanishes. It is slowly eroded away. That was deliberate.

The revolutionaries in Columbia do not want to deal drugs, murder people, kidnap people. That is not
the ideal they were fighting for.
