Final Word: Democrats Are WORSE Than Republicans
I know. You’re totally flabbergasted and think that I’ve gone off the deep end. Well, I haven’t. You’ve just stomached so much blue covered propaganda throughout your life that the title of this entry sounds insane. But I assure you that it is not. Once again, this isn’t a question of “playing radical” and trying to be the most arch. It is an important political question. I’m not advocating that people start voting Republican, nor am I endorsing their politics. What I am advocating is that people make a clear break with both corporate parties and stop pretending that one is the nicer face. It isn’t. Keeping progressive, radical, and working class forces chained to the Democrats is the main impediment to social progress in America.

2. Main impediment to social progress is ignorance and corporate/GOP rule
Caucasian workers who are more ignorant (such as those who watch FOX it has been shown) tend to vote with the GOP

3. "Our two party system is a bowl of shit, looking at itself in the mirror." Lewis Black
I voted for Obama, I canvassed for him, I donated money to his campaign. Throughout the Bush admin, I protested, did grassroots things against Bush. I voted for Obama for real change. We are not anywhere near ending the wars, gays are still being tossed out of the military, the Bush people have gotten off scot free, health care insurance reform will probably be a weak and useless Baucus-like thing. Obama is the end of hope. If we can't get change from him, who can we get change from? Ain't gonna happen.

4. "Make a clear break
with both with both corporate parties"
1- and replace with?
2- aren't there a lot of Graysons who "democrats" refuse tosupport?
3- Dr dean offered us a choice and what did "democrats" do?
What we need to do is, get involved more. Asking, is getting involved.....but always remember "we" still have the ultimate power...
"the vote"...So if you feel that way start mobilizing now......

5. Demorats
No I'm not totally flabbergasted by your post. The fascists/corporatist power structure is firmly entrenched and supported by both parties, and our politicians are scared shitless of their power and afraid of the people also. Its just all about fear. The average voter is a misinformed dolt who only cares about a paycheck and football games. This culture of ignorance is promulgated by the media for the fascists/corporatist state. You must remember that we are not dealing with reality here, but with a state sponsored religion with canons such as "free enterprise", "rugged individualism" and "grred is good". Capitalism is a religion and the leaders are just the preachers and bishops. It knows it can't survive rationality so it uses emotion. Lee Atwater is a great example when he told Republicans they can't win on the issues, so we got God, guns and gays. The churches of America merely support the status quo because thats the side their Bread is buttered on.
We will never make the progress and change we need until we become a rational nation. Over forty years of experience in civil rights, workers rights and progressive politics has shown me a lot of slime under a lot of rocks. We lefties are just as guilty at times willing to go along and eat shit to get the leftovers from the fascist banquet. We have never been able to mount any threat to either party
in my lifetime. the green party is a bad joke, the various socialist parties are largely debating societies and constantly fighting with each other. Speaking of ratioality even DU has a dam astrology group. This is the kind of bullshit that is not harmless. Idiots can say its because of the stars and shrug it off and not look at the real cause and effect.
In order to change things we need better education for all. Quite simply we are a third world country mired is superstition(religion). Many on the left are just as bad and merely trying to enforce their non-factual "beliefs" on the rest of us.

6. No, I am not - a rebuttal.
Since the recent power shift, I've been getting a little perturbed by the kind of unsupported self-validation being defensively pushed by formerly moderate Republicans who have since become embarrassed by their party but are unwilling to give an inch on the propaganda they swallowed regarding their long-standing opponent, the "Democrat Party".

Now whenever I'm critical of the Republicans, these unaffiliated, quasi-neutral contrarians come out of the woodwork to remind me that both parties are essentially the same and that they both stink. While the OP may not be coming from the same context, the tactic appears to be similar.

Well let me set a few things straight here:

First, the Republican and Democratic parties are not essentially the same. Yes, they both have issues with corruption, disingenuous representation, and competency. That is because they both hold some of the reins of power and such things go hand-in-hand with consolidation of power. That's not going to go away just because you create a new party. If that party gains some measure of control, it will be plagued by the same demons. This criticism is tantamount to saying that both parties are the same because they are both comprised of people. It is trivially true, but not substantively so. The two parties have differing ideologies, differing platforms, differing priorities, differing agendas, and all this consequent on differing support bases.

Second, the OP's points are vague and unsupported. The Democrats are worse than the Republicans, he claims. How so? He does not say. Support? He "assures" you. This isn't an argument, it's an attempt to sell you a bridge.

Finally, let me just point out to the OP that this is a site for Democrats, not just anti-Republicans. He seems to assume that since the Republican party was taken over by a radical fringe and has betrayed its original constituency, all it will take is a simple equivocation of Republican to Democrat to get the Democratic constituency to jump ship for their own good.

But here's the thing: we haven't been betrayed. We may need to be vigilant in holding the feet of our representatives to the fire in order to get what we want, but that certainly doesn't warrant burning down the ship. Our guys are in power, and they're pushing for a lot of things that we as Democrats want, foremost being healthcare reform. Are they as successful as we'd like? No. Do they all agree? No. Are some of them disingenuous corporate shills? Yes. These are all unfortunate realities, but they do not change the fact that the legislative branch is pushing in a different direction than it was for the past eight years, and that direction reflects many of the things that we as Democrats would like to see. What is really needed is a mobilization of political will from the electorate to push the corruption to the fringe and give the legitimate representatives the kind of support they need to do right by us. You like a guy like Dennis Kucinich? Then support him. More of a Carl Levin fan. Then support him. Let these people know what you want and that you have their back in fighting for it.

So thanks but no thanks, "Truthway." I think I'll stick with my party, notwithstanding your "important political question."

7. Thank you for
this rebuttal, and you've said what I would have said if I were as eloquent as you.

We don't need a Third Party, we just need to reclaim the Democratic Party from those who have hijacked it under the guise of becoming New Democrats.

8. You make a good point that I hadn't previously thought about
I have often wondered if we shouldn't just start a new party, in order to leave behind the corrupt Democrats like Baucus and Lieberman (when he was a Democrat), and Blanche Lincoln. But you made me realize that by the time that party gained sufficient power to have any effect, it would just be infiltrated with new corrupt and compromised politicains. Because not enough people really pay enough attention to know who they are and keep them out.

Even here at DU we are infiltrated by those trying to disrupt any cohesiveness we might have.

I guess the real challenge, then, is to expose and hopefully cull those that really aren't working in our interest, keep their number to a minimum, while building a big enough majority where there is room to work around them.

9. You are entirely
correct, and we desperately need to re-claim the Democratic Party for Democrats. The DLC, and the New Democrats have infiltrated our Party, and even claim "leadership" without a grassroots mandate. They are an insidious fifth column with the same goals as their neoconservative masters.

The "cure" will be painful, but necessary: we need to surgically remove all DLC and "centrist" DINOs, and replace them with Liberal Democrats. This can only be accomplished at the grassroots level, as the DLC has the same access to corporate money as do the neoconservatives.

Difficult task, but not impossible.
