When conservatives like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck talk about the people of our country, they claim to be the “real Americans.” The rest of us just occupy space here, I guess. And a lot of people believe them.
While there are a lot of ignorant people here (since half the country has an IQ of less than 100), they are not the “real Americans.” They are Americans, but the people who made our country exceptional are the ones who embraced learning and critical thought, and that excludes most conservatives. That excludes the radical right-wingers who offer nothing but lies, fear, and hatred. It excludes those who embrace guns and violence, and at the same time claim to follow the teachings of Jesus. Those aren’t the people who made our country exceptional. Those are the barnacles on the dinghy of life.
After the shootings in Phoenix, Democrats finally started speaking out. While the shooter was purely delusional in his thinking, the political climate that exists in America today has absolutely pushed some unstable people over the edge. And the left and the right are not equally responsible for that climate. Contrary to what many in the media believe, we don’t have to balance everything just to keep the overly emotional right-wingers from crying. There is such a thing as truth, and the truth doesn’t have to be balanced by a right-wing spin on the truth.
So don’t let up, fellow liberals and progressives. We need to take our country back. Obama has shown that he isn’t going to fight for our values, so next year we need to find a real progressive who will. What we need is another Teddy Roosevelt: the first American progressive (even though he was a Republican).
