Former SEIU Head has a great idea!
Of course, this hasn't been reported by the libural media, but this is huge! I hope he can get it going as it will take action like this to save our country. The right paints it as an extension of the Cloward Piven Plan, but it's clearly not!

You're right, the right is freaking out over this.

Destabilize the economy...horrors! Re-distribute the wealth...O noes!

Cause it's not like the right isn't trying to destabilize the economy by laying off government workers, pushing austerity measures, reducing social programs, etc. and they haven't championed policies that have seen wealth re-distributed upward into the hands of the top 1 percent over the past thirty years.

5. I think we could accomplish the same effect if everyone simply
stopped their cable television subscriptions. How do the corporate oligarchs and banks and other such monsters control us -- through advertising.

Now I do not mind legitimate corporations and business -- nothing against them. I want them to do their business well, to produce good products. No problem.

But when they take such a large share of the profits in their personal salaries and bonuses (and not all companies do this) that ordinary people cannot pay the rent, eat, pay off the debt for the companies' products and survive, when they are firing to outsource instead of hiring to insource, then they are being irresponsible. They are not playing their legitimate role in society so why should I?

People who outsource our jobs and import trash to sell us at inflated prices are economic terrorists.

Bankers who charge usurious interest rates are economic terrorists too.

Ordinary Americans are very honest and very conscientious. That is why I do not think that any of us would stop paying our debts just to make a point. As a result, I do not think that Americans would go along with this scheme.

The reason that Americans are in so much debt is that they see too many ads. And the most effective ads are the ones they watch on the television.

Turning off your TV and ending your cable subscription are the most effective moneysaving actions you can take. Trust me. I have done it. It is astounding how effectively TV makes even a tightwad like me think I need all sorts of things that I don't need at all.

So I like the idea of a mass action, but turning off the TV and canceling cable and other forms of TV subscriptions would be the most effective way to change our country, the best way to speak out. And it is painless.

It would be especially effective if we did it one neighborhood at a time. Because then neighbors could join together to organize alternative activities. When I was a child, I and my family used to sing together. Sounds quaint, I suppose. Reading is also a lot of fun. We used to read together in the days before TV. And we listened to the radio. Radio ads do not have the same psychological effect that watching TV has.

In case you are wondering, I get my news and other information on the internet, and we order movies and TV series (without the ads) from Netflix. They aren't the newest TV series but it is much nicer watching them when we want and far cheaper.

If we just organized a TV-free day and made a deal out of it, we might be able to prove our strength. Get everyone in the country who wants a new deal out into the street some evening this summer instead of in front of the TV. It does not have to be a march or a demonstration. Just some alternative activities that are fun and that are advertised as a demonstration of solidarity. Demonstrations do not have to be strident. I think it would be wiser for us to have demonstrations that build community rather than that complain about things.

6. You're right on the money!
TV is even worse now since it's used along with the X box as a baby sitter. TV is probably the largest contributor to our health care delimna. We're bombarded with ads telling us we need meds for conditions we didn't know existed 20 years ago. Restless Leg Syndrome?? What the fuck! Then after the ads for the meds, the liars ads come on telling you to sue Acme Pharma cause you died from taking BonerPro TM

Add the above to the constant scream of what we need just to be cool and the lies of the newscasters and it paints a pretty clear picture.

I'm all in favor of a TV free day! Great idea!
