Despite a recent peace agreement aimed at ending the five-year war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), massacres, mutilation and rape continue in the eastern part of the country. Within a 10-week period in 2003, more than 100 cases of rape and sexual abuse were reported, including sexual torture of women committed in front of their husbands or other family members. Gang rapes, sometimes performed in public, have been used to terrorize the women and girls and to humiliate civilian populations suspected of collaborating with enemy forces, forcing these populations into submission. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS among combatants has added considerably to the trauma faced by the victims.
