In Lexington, KY, one of a local activist came up with the following idea that has been implemented, starting on 3/19. Once a month, we are doing a street corner campaign against different aspects of the Bush administration each month. On Friday, 3/19, the focus was the war in Iraq. 3x6 signs were made that had the following on them: "They Lied About The War. Bush Didn't Care. We Do. Do You?" Along with un-flattering photos of Bush & Cheney. There were smaller signs with 4 similar messages about the war. Through simple email organization, volunteer intersection co-ordinators were signed up for particular high-volume intersections. On Friday, 3/19, 250 showed up to send the message to our community. Based on Kentucky Highway Department traffic flow numbers, our signs were seen by approximately 200,000 people. Reports from the corners were fairly consistent: about 3 out 4 people who responded did so favorably. A few of the intersections reported some nasty confrontations with Bush supporters, but they were rare. The signs were used again at the downtown demontration on 3/20 and when Cheney came to Jeffersonville, Indiana last week. His limo drove by a line of protestors holding the big signs with his likeness on them. No way he could avoid seeing them! The signs that were made cost about $350. At the 3/20 protest, we collected $300 to help cover the cost of the signs.
Our next action will be on Tax day - April 15th. The signs we have used are designed to be used over again, just changing the basic message. So for Tax day, we are using the folliwng: "Don't Tax...Just spend, spend, spend" / Big sign - "$7 Trillion in Debt. They don't care. We do. Do you?" "Their War - Your Taxes." Future actions will focus on the environment, the economy and the erosion of civil liberties. Soon, we will have a website up to assist with organizing these events: wecare-doyou.org
