MANCHESTER, N.H., Dec. 11 — On Tuesday morning, as Al Gore announced his endorsement of Howard Dean, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut was at Logan International Airport in Boston, surrounded by aides still working out the details of their response to the setback. As he passed through the terminal, a man shouted, "Give them hell, Joe!" Two more people offered their support as well.
The moment was not lost on Mr. Lieberman, who is now trying to capitalize on that sympathy. In the days since, Mr. Lieberman, who learned of Mr. Gore's endorsement from the news media rather than from his 2000 running mate, has rarely missed a chance to tell reporters and voters how his New Hampshire office has been flooded with e-mail messages from people siding with him and expressing anger at Mr. Gore. People stop him on the street, he says, and have suddenly been pledging money to his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Minutes into a town hall meeting here set to be broadcast on Saturday night as a paid advertisement, one man asked Mr. Lieberman what he could say to make him vote for him because he was "sitting here and I'm really upset, no, I'm mad" about Mr. Gore's endorsement as several others in the audience applauded.
"People are stopping me on the streets and saying, `Stick with it, friend,' " Mr. Lieberman said. "I feel something building up here, and with your help it's going to build up to take us to a surprise in New Hampshire and then on to the White House."
