Howard Dean has captured the support of many of Iowa’s Democratic county chairs, according to a new, unscientific survey conducted by IowaPolitics.com.
The former Vermont governor was backed by 40.8 percent of the county chairs who responded to a mail survey that was sent to all 99 Iowa Democratic county chairs. Forty-nine of Iowa’s 99 Democratic county chairs responded to the survey; however, the results do not add up to 100 percent because some respondents left questions blank and others responded with multiple answers to single questions. Anonymity was promised to the respondents.
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry was supported by 26.5 percent of the respondents, followed by North Carolina Sen. John Edwards with 18.4 percent and Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt with 10.2 percent. Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and U.S. Sen.(and non-candidate) Hillary Clinton each received one vote.
It is important to note that all but a handful of the surveys were completed and mailed before former Vice President Al Gore made a much-publicized visit to Iowa to endorse Dean.
