Clark's Tax Plan
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 04:34 PM by ludwigb

At first glance this is good, very good. Politically it is very safe--the Pubs can't say it will decrease incentives to work because Clark's only raising taxes on those earning more than 1 million, and only by 5%. The only drawback is Clark won't be getting many corporate contributions after this :)

Still, I would like to see the Bush tax cuts go first--otherwise how do we pay for health care, education, and Iraq? In the real world, either taxes need to be raised or defense needs to be cut. But since the public doesn't seem to care about deficits the Clark plan may be the smarter way to go politically.

1. He preserves middle-income cuts...
While eliminating the windfall Dub gave the wealthy. Smart plan.

2. Clark is offering corporations $5,000 for every new job and $10,000...

for every new manufacturing job over the next 2-3 years. I think that helps the bottom line. Then again, these folks only worry about themselves.

3. flat tax
I still think a flat tax of anywhere between 13-17% across the board with no deductions would be the best tax plan.

6. Clark on Bush's tax cuts:
He rolls back Bush's tax cuts for people earning over $200,000/year, and uses that money to pay for new programs and deficit reduction. His new proposal -- the one he announced on Monday -- is revenue-neutral; but it is in addition to the earlier cuts; it doesn't replace them. Personally, I think that separating the issues of deficit reduction and increased progressivity is smart.
