Excerpts from a report by Lu Bauer, Maine Co-Coordinator:
Yesterday's tour in Maine was fabulous. We were all on
an incredible high with the huge turnouts Dennis brought
out every step of the way! At the University of Maine in
Orono, Dennis brought 350 students to their feet repeatedly
...The Unitarian Church in Belfast was bursting its seams,
and people just kept on coming. Standing room only pushed
back into overflow rooms in the church. The excitement was
contagious. Local organizers had been speaking with the
crowd of an estimated 250 curious and supporters about
how they can have a voice in deciding the nominee...A
traveling rap team showed up unexpectedly from California
to entertain and literally sing the praises of the
candidate.. engaging the audience in rap songs like
"We Want Dennis Kucinich", as they awaited the arrival of
the delegation. The Mayor of Belfast welcomed Congressman
Kucinich to the city... and the church organ played
John Lennon's "Imagine" as Kucinich and the riders from the
bus came jubilantly down the aisle. This scene was repeated
thrice more that day! In Rockland...In Bath...again, the crowd
was huge, topping 450 with standing room only...In South
Portland...People are newly excited about caucusing for
Dennis on February 8.

Kucinich campaigns in Maine

PORTLAND (AP) -- While most presidential candidates are giving short shrift to Maine, Dennis Kucinich spent much of the day touring the state by bus.

It was the fourth campaign visit to Maine by the Ohio congressman. He began Wednesday's tour at the University of Maine in Orono and went from there to Bucksport, Belfast, Rockland, Bath and South Portland.

Kucinich said Dick Gephardt, who dropped out after Iowa, put all his eggs in one basket, whereas he himself is putting little eggs in 50 baskets.

There is no democratic candidate running with a stronger opposition to the patriot act.

He not only didn't "author" it, he voted against it, and introduced legislation to replace it. The only one who did.

Just 45 days after the September 11, 2001, attacks, President Bush rammed the "PATRIOT Act" through Congress with virtually no debate. This law poses an unprecedented threat to Americans' individual freedoms and is a violation of our civil liberties. Many provisions of the act had been long sought after by law enforcement and repeatedly rejected by Congress in the past.

Without a warrant or probable cause, the FBI can now search your private medical records or access your library records. Your doctor or local library is forbidden from notifying you when these searches take place. The government may search your home while you are away and in some cases even confiscate your property. Judicial oversight of these measures is virtually nonexistent. These are only a few of the PATRIOT Act's provisions that compromise our civil liberties.

Dennis Kucinich believes the only way to stop these unconstitutional infringements on basic American freedoms is to revoke the exorbitant powers the PATRIOT Act has granted the government. He is the only presidential candidate who voted against the PATRIOT Act. As president, one of his first moves will be to repeal it.

Kucinich, along with 20 other members of Congress, has introduced the Benjamin Franklin True Patriot Act, which would repeal several major sections of the law. It would eliminate the PATRIOT Act's subjective search-and-seizure provision, unwarranted incarcerations, and the authority of federal officials to search our private records without probable cause. The act would restore the fundamental right of attorney-client privilege, revoke various Department of Justice secrecy orders, and repeal provisions harmful to the rights of immigrants. In addition, it would restore transparency to Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security administrative procedures by revoking Freedom of Information Act secrecy orders.

Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." In eroding our civil liberties, President Bush has taken our freedom while making us no safer, no better protected against terrorism. The "PATRIOT Act" is not what American patriots fought and died for. As Americans, we cannot allow fear and scare-mongering to lead us to a place where we abandon our most precious traditions.

Sounds like someone is a little disgruntled over not "winning" Iowa. It's going to be a long, messy road to the nomination if we have to deal with tantrums everytime a candidate is outmaneuvered.

10. i went to the Belfast gathering

it was relatively small gathering but Belfast is a relatively small town. More people turned out then was planned for though, that much was obvious.

There were citizens of all ages there; little old men and women, teens, middle-aged folks, and young persons like my son, whom i took out of school so he too, could attend.

Dennis was eloquent, genuine and inspirational.

I am behind this man 110%.

He's A true American hero.

The Monument: You have campaigned more than once in Maine. Have you been to other states that often?

Dennis: As of Jan. 21 I will have campaigned in Maine on four occasions, and we plan to be a here a fifth time on Sunday, Feb. 8, the date of the Maine caucuses. We have been in some other states more times than this. We have spent considerable time in New Hampshire, Iowa and California, as well as several other states. We are running a 50-state campaign.
Our Maine campaign stops to date have been Aug. 29 in Portland; Sept. 19 in Bangor and the Common Ground Fair in Unity; and Jan. 14 in Lewiston and Westbrook. Our Jan 21 trip has planned stops in Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Old Town, Bucksport, Belfast, Rockland, Bath, South Portland and Portland.

The Monument: Why spend so much valuable time campaigning in Maine?

Dennis: Maine is a very important part of our campaign strategy. Maine has 28 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, one more than New Hampshire. The Maine caucus follows fairly closely on the heels of the New Hampshire primary. Maine has a population of progressively minded citizens who are active participants in the presidential election process.

The early going has been rough for our campaign only because the national media has not seen fit to give us the same exposure it has bestowed on some other candidates. We will do much better than predictions in New Hampshire, and will follow that with excellent results in Maine. Maine will fuel our move to the front of the pack and play a great part in helping us earn better coverage from the national media.
