FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Vince Whitacre Announces Withdrawal From Congressional Race; Endorses Bryan Kennedy
Statement of Vince Whitacre
WAUKESHA, WI -- Last July, I announced my intention to seek the the Fifth Congressional District's Democratic nomination. I entered the race for two reasons: first, I wanted to get rid of Jim Sensenbrenner; and second, I wanted to build the Democratic Party in this Republican-dominated district.
After much consideration, as well as discussions with close advisers and family, I have decided to withdraw from the primary and support Bryan Kennedy for the Democratic nomination.
I've gotten to know Bryan a little over the past few months, and I've learned that he is a terrific human being. In more recent weeks, he has convinced me that he is just as committed as I am to standing up for the rights, the interests, and the needs of Wisconsin's working families. Bryan also has demonstrated that he has the ability to raise both money and public awareness, two things my campaign lacks.
We have in this race a candidate with the vision, the drive, and the money to pose a serious challenge to the status quo. I realize now that this candidate is not me. And it is that realization that has led me to my decision to end my candidacy.
Bryan will be a strong nominee for our party, and there is no reason for me to stand in the way of that -- a long primary battle will only weaken the Democratic Party's chances in November.
I would like to sincerely thank everyone who offered their support and assistance over the last several months. You have my deepest gratitude and affection. I hope you show Bryan Kennedy the same dedication you have shown me.
