U.S. border policies divide Senate hopefuls; Kenyan in US Senate Race
U.S. border policies divide Senate hopefuls

SPRINGFIELD - The next U.S. senator from Illinois most likely will not be backing President Bush's plan to give illegal immigrants work permits - at least not 100 percent.

Beyond that, however, the seven Republicans and seven Democrats vying for each party's respective nomination have varying stances on just what to do about immigration - from putting soldiers on the Mexico border to penalizing those who illegally hire foreign workers.

The issue, which has taken the national stage with Bush's proposal, is dividing Republicans and Democrats alike.

Republicans are split on the immigration plan proposed by their president. Democrats, meanwhile, differ on whether more should be spent securing our borders. President Bush proposed giving three-year, renewable worker visas to immigrants willing to take jobs Americans don't want. The visas would allow the workers to come and go legally, without fear of deportation or being denied re-entry into the United States. Employers would have to certify that no Americans wanted the job. Once the visa expires, the foreign worker would have to leave. They would get no special consideration for citizenship.

An American of Kenyan descent is topping the opinion polls in the race for Senator in the state of Illinois.

The result of the latest polls show Mr Barack Obama has taken Illinois by storm and is getting endorsements from senior members of the Democratic Party.

Obama, whose father came from Ndori, Siaya District, is giving the current Senator, Mr Peter G Fitzgerald, quite a run for his money.

If elected senator, Obama, 42, will join the pool of representatives from whom the American president is picked as decreed by the constitution of the world's most powerful nation.

The national senate is the highest legislative body in the US.

Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Hawaii, where his father, Barack Obama, had gone to study in 1959.
