Michael Jordan contributed $10,000 to Barack Obama campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Campaign finance records show U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama got a large contribution from a high-profile citizen -- Michael Jordan.

The basketball superstar donated $10,000 dollars to Obama's campaign.

Obama says he debated whether to frame the check or cash it.

Since he began campaign fund-raising more than a year ago, Obama has collected about four.3 millio .

He is one of seven Democrats competing in Illinois' March 16th primary for his party's nomination to run for the seat held by retiring Republican Senator Peter Fitzgerald.

There are also eight Republican candidates.

Loved the check and cash joke :-)

1. hah
Obama is a classy guy. Jordan is rather apolitical but when he support someone its usually the Democrat. He was an ardent Bradley supporter in 2000.

2. Unfortunately, Obama is running for federal office...
... and a $10,000 personal contribution directly to his campaign is illegal under current federal law.

Either this is a set-up, or Obama will have to refund a large part of the contribution from Jordan.

Cheers.

3. Hm. He legally can give $8,000
$2,000 from him for the primary, $2,000 for the general; $2,000 from his wife for the primary; $2,000 from her for the general. (The $ earmarked for the general must be returned if he loses the primary.)

This also could be a bundled/conduit contribution -- MJ had a fundraiser and this is what he raised. (Bundling is less legal under McCain/Feingold than it used to be, but there's still ways to do it.)

It's possible, also, that the $10,000 was pulled from a joint account with two or more business partners (if it's set up as a joint partnership, and everyone is eligible to contribute, that's legal).

I did a quick news search and found several articles about this; none mentioned legalities. Since I'm sure the Obama committee has a decent treasurer, accountant, lawyer or whoever, I have a feeling this was done through legal means. The last thing he'd want to do is broadcast a big campaign-finance violation the day before the election.

4. Individual contributions were set at $12,000 max.
The MJ donation was perfectly legal. For the general, the limit will drop back to 2,000, unless Jack Ryan decides to start pumping his personal fortune into his war chest.
The limit changed in the primary due to exemptions in McCain-Feingold that allow larger contributions during a race with a self-financing candidate.

5. About time!
I've been wondering for so long about the "two tracks" of African Americans... the affluent sports stars, musicians, actors, et al while many suffer in poverty. It's about time I see the wealthy give back.

Next I'm wondering when Oprah, if she refuses to run, will at least use her tremendous influence to help someone other than Shmuckenegger.

7. Michael Jordan's donation.
I believe Michael Jordan has three kids. At 2K per kid=6,000,his wife,2K, and himself adds up to 10,000 dollars.

The Repugnicans have been washing donations through their children for years.

8. He donated all 10k himself, which was perfectly legal.
The maximum limit for single contributors was set at $12,000 for the primary.
