Collins vows to stay in Ga. Senate race
http://www.thehill.com/campaign/032504_collins.aspx

Ignoring seemingly stiff odds against winning the Republican Senate primary in Georgia, Rep. Mac Collins (R) is ramping up his fundraising, preparing to launch television ads and mobilizing his troops.

The six-term member trails his two rivals, Rep. Johnny Isakson and pizza magnate Herman Cain, in the race for campaign cash. In a poll taken late last year, Collins came in second, edging out Cain, but Georgia Republicans believe Collins may have lost ground to Cain since then.

Collins, 59, must decide soon if he wants to keep his seat in the suburban-rural 8th District south of Atlanta, or go for a long-shot Senate campaign, since he can’t run for both offices. The deadline for filing for congressional candidates in Georgia is April 30, long before the July 20 primary.

Collins spokeswoman Carolyn Hern said there’s no doubt about Collins’ determination to stay in the Senate race. “Mac Collins has decided to for go running for the House for a seventh term and is fully committed to becoming Georgia’s next senator,” she said.

1. Young on Farts
While there is a lot of talk about first term Democratic Rep. Denise Majette running for the Georgia Senate, I think the following quote is more fun:

"At 72, I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in Washington with a bunch of pompous old farts, listening to people read statements they didn't even write and probably don't believe, " said former UN Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young on why he decided not to run for the Senate from Georgia.

2. Hope so!
I sure hope Mac Collins stays in the race--surely makes things harder on Isakson, and if Collins gets the nod, it'll make it more possible for a Dem in the general.

3. I doubt any Dem has a chance in the general
So, it may be better to have Isakson in the senate because he is more moderate and is even mixed on abortion which is pretty rare for any southern republican male.
