http://www.thehill.com/campaign/032504_collins.aspxIgnoring seemingly stiff odds against winning the Republican Senate primary in Georgia, Rep. Mac Collins (R) is ramping up his fundraising, preparing to launch television ads and mobilizing his troops.
The six-term member trails his two rivals, Rep. Johnny Isakson and pizza magnate Herman Cain, in the race for campaign cash. In a poll taken late last year, Collins came in second, edging out Cain, but Georgia Republicans believe Collins may have lost ground to Cain since then.
Collins, 59, must decide soon if he wants to keep his seat in the suburban-rural 8th District south of Atlanta, or go for a long-shot Senate campaign, since he can’t run for both offices. The deadline for filing for congressional candidates in Georgia is April 30, long before the July 20 primary.
Collins spokeswoman Carolyn Hern said there’s no doubt about Collins’ determination to stay in the Senate race. “Mac Collins has decided to for go running for the House for a seventh term and is fully committed to becoming Georgia’s next senator,” she said.
